Subject: Is it a Brave New World?
Jeff from Michigan    3/13/2003 10:05:09 PM
Below is a long essay about the world. I found it very stimulating. I have some conclusions but I would like to spark some discussion before I post my ideas. I would in particular to hear from the foreign posters like Mustaris, Onegus, Jean, Veritas (you still there?) as well as the usual suspects. I found this on Andrew Sullivan.com an interesting blog site. http://www.techcentralstation.com/1051/defensewrapper.jsp?PID=1051-350&CID=1051-031103A I will warn you that this is a long essay with some references to Marx and Hegel. I look forward to some reactions. Jeff

I read this article. This is perhaps one of the five best compilations of why Saddam should be eliminated that I have ever seen. Its time for the New World Order to really come about.

This is an amazing article, and I can't even begin to digest it on one quick read. But I will find the time, somehow, as this article deserves it, and respond eventually.

I disagree with the premise that the war and aftermath of a war with Iraq is an unprecedented undertaking. Yes they are not "playing by the rules" - but we have a solution for that. Remember the reasons why the Japanese do not teach their children to fly planes into American property anymore. There are 2. Hiroshima, and Nagasaki.

It is a large text and I may have to read it again. Here are some of my thoughts: - There have been several unreal fantasy worldviews in the past (national socialism, fascism, communism) that didn't play by the rules or acted in their self interest. So the current way of seeing and doing things based on history is not totally obsolete. - The way that thing today are different is that because of WMD these fantasy worldviews develop a lot faster into dangerous threats (potentially immediately). - The article doesn't adress our own weird fantasy worldview. (an indication of this is people blaming the west for being attacked) - I'm still not totally convinced that the only problem is Islam mainly because all the reasoning of the terrorists is exactly the same as with communism. - Even if the world is new the people will alway be the same

I think that many of his premises are debateble and his opinions about dark ages like politics is more real and true are funny to hear and horrendous in practice. I agree that the flavour of the day enemy, the islamic world, is a living in a fantasy world. His own grasp on realism is obvious when he thinks that the world will that Geroge Bush declar national soverigity null and void and himself as an omnipotent omnipresenet king of the world. i found it interesting and refreshing though that he had morals and values and actually let them play a part in his reasoning. he even takes up the possibility of them being betrayed in creating a world dictatorship so he obviously isnt completely clueless. felt a bit like warmongering though. Thanks for the tip. I see some paralellels: In Medieval times Denmark rose to great power. One of the reasons was the sale of salted Herring. Once the herring disappered we slowly securely fell back to square one. Sweden in the renaissance had a similar windfall in cobber, which made Sweden about the richest nation in the world. Took a generation to waste it all. In this way the parallel is strong - also because both countries very belligrent at the hight of their wealth. I do not agree, that the national state is outmoded as such. If the state cannot control its members - others will take action. To claim You have no control over the events is a non starter - the state is accountable no matter what. It has always been like that. He is right in the dictomy between the soverainity of the nations and the selfdetermination of the peoples. It has for long been difficult to square that circle. New world order - I don't think so - the security policy of the United States has always been "proactive" Just my immediate reactions.
