Subject: Gorshkov becoming a white elephant?
Phaid    10/14/2007 12:54:03 PM
(Ouch, sorry about that headline!) Barents Observer reports that the conversion from Gorshkov to Vikramaditya at Sevmash is well behind schedule and the cost is likely to rise to three times the original budget. " The construction of the aircraft carrier “Admiral Gorshkov” has created a complicated situation at the Sevmash construction yard in Severodvinsk, Arkhangelsk Oblast, company director Nikolay Kalistratov says. The vessel, which is to be sold to India, has become three times more expensive than originally projected." Link to follow.

Link here.

Between this, and the recent problems with the rising costs of the Su-30MKI, things aren't looking so hot for the big arms deals between India and Russia.

it certainly reinforces my long promoted view that the indians have been hosed by the russians and would have been far better off getting a first fitout hull built in sth korea etc.....

Yup.  Then again, IMO anyone who signs up for a STOBAR carrier is getting hosed from the beginning.  At this rate they would have been better off signing up for the CVF programme and ordering the French version.

Rumours (nothing from a reliable/confidential source) have it that India is buying HMS Illustrious.
