Subject: Urgent appeal: US combat effectiveness and analysis wanted
Panther    9/23/2010 5:15:30 PM
After years of being bombarded by anti-US propaganda ad nauseam, i am desperately appealing to anyone here in sharing acquired information along the lines of the thread title, that is, a fresh analysis of combat operations and the effectiveness of US soldiers in the field since 2001? Foreign opinions, along with the domestic opinions sought, are welcomed only as long as the opinion expressed in this thread are done so in a respectful and constructive manner that adds to the discussion. Be warned, any distraction with the hope of inflaming us Americans, will be treated with the extreme contempt it deserves by me! I will show no mercy if i choose to respond too such idiocy! I also ask that my fellow Americans show the up most courtesy and patience to any foreigner who offers an opinion on this subject! If anyone feels highly insulted as being caused to reply, then it is best not too reply at all! As with any foreign comments, constructive criticism and respect on our part is the name of the game! Now i respectfully ask that there be no ideology, no bias, no d!ck comparisons between national military's or any inter-service rivalries creep into the discussion, no conspiracy theories and absolutely no fu#king stupid drive by comment with words such as quagmire, Vietnam, murderers, baby killers or any such like. That only reveals the one doing the posting of such, as the world's dumbest @$$hole in existence. In other words, rational opinions is what i am seeking, not the extremely mind numbing comments by the brainwashed nincompoops, via our corrupt news media! It is simply ridiculous that i have to resort to this method in finding rational opinions? sigh... Thanks!

Been a month now and no comments?
Too loaded and too subjective.  This sort of ground has been covered before, and as you noted has devolved into insults and nationalistic bluster.  A lot of Europeans consider American troops to be ill-disciplined and trigger happy, while most Americans consider European troops to be soft and risk averse.  Both sides can make some convincing arguments (although I would argue that it's Europe's politicians that are soft, not their troops).  In the end most of us have stayed away from this topic because we know where it will go.  I would argue that today's American soldier and Marine are among the best we've ever fielded in US history.  They are combat hardened, smart, and technologically saavy.  It is fashionable in the United States to diss the young people of America as indolent and unmotivated, but those kids took Baghdad in a matter of weeks and have killed tens of thousands of terrorists in Iraq and Afghanistan.  History will have to be the ultimate judge of how good the modern US soldier is (or was).
