Subject: U.S. Counterinsurgency in Iraq: Lessons from the Philippine War

Tom Donnelly & Vance Serchuk November 3, 2003 LINK This quote illustrates why and only why we are going to fail in Afghanistan - "Like an effective political campaign, counterinsurgency should be animated by an overarching and clearly-defined vision that endows the endeavor with a distinct purpose." Does not the example of the Philipine - American War match up even more closely with Afghanistan? We were not militarily defeated in Vietnam. We lost Vietnam through a failure of political organization and direction at home here in the US. It was solely a failure of will on the part of the leadership of this country. The moment Obama anounced a date for the draw down, he lost us the war in Afghanistan. That is, we will lose Afghanistan through a failure of the political leadership here at home. But look for Obama to excuse his irresponsibility by scapegoating the US military.
