There are approximately 15,000 Regular Members, of which I am one. There are also hundreds of Civilian Members (who work as pilots, dispatchers and other specialists), plus thousands of Public Servants that are attached to the RCMP (secretaries mainly). So to answer your question there are about 15,000 uniformed police officers.

Ontario has the Ontario Provincial Police, and Quebec has Police de Quebec and a highway patrol style force as well as numerous small town/city/village police forces. The small size of the Quebec village and town forces prevents max. enforcement. And the Customs/Dounes de Canada isent helping one bit. Despite its shortcomings Canadian law enforcement is very similar to policing here in the states. Chris

ChrisWI: I am a constable, which is the lowest rank. About 1/3 of the Force are constables. Recruits are called Cadets. After graduating from the training academy, known as around the world as "Depot", the cadet is sworn in as a regular member with the rank of constable. After 7 years service you are eligible for promotion to corporal. However, many members spend their entire careers as constables. After you are a corporal you can also apply to be a commissioned officer and skip up to an inspector. The rank system is as follows: -Constable Non-Commissioned Officers: -Corporal -Sergeant -Staff Sergeant -Sergeant-Major (only 5 - 1 per region & 1 at Training Academy) -Staff Sergeant-Major (none right now I believe) -Corps Sergeant-Major (only 1 at National HQ) Commissioned Officers: -Inspector -Superintendent -Chief Superintendent -Assistant Commissioner (15 Divisional Commanders - each province is a division, plus the HQ Div and Depot/Training Div) -Deputy Commissioner (4 Regional Commanders - Pacific, Northwest, Central and Atlantic) -Commissioner (national commander) There is a complete history of the RCMP on our webpage at
