Subject: US Ambassador and hand gun speech
Ehran    9/19/2005 1:02:12 PM
according to the ambassador canada's problem with us handguns coming across the border is entirely our own fault. if we simply stop buying them the flood will stop. hmm guess we don't need to worry bout hearing from the americans about oh marijuana flooding south then.

Mexican immigrants would be another example.

I'll give you hypocritical, absolutley. To me it would appear that neither one of our nations is tough enough on drug smugglers and gun runners.

thing is platy i do believe we are going about this is a painfully dumb way. in canada we need to seriously penalize gun criminals. a fairly minor change in the wording of a single law making it impossible to trade away the jail time for using a firearm would go far in solving that problem. in the states i think it's time to start diverting money from attacking the supply to attacking the demand. good ol free enterprise will ensure there is supply coming in to meet the demand.

i appreciate your good intentions but man you have no idea what you're talking about. canada already has gun laws that would cause the nra to burst their collective blood vessels. handguns are essentially impossible to carry about other than being transported to and from a shooting club in locked boxes. most hand gun owners who actually shoot rent lockers at the club rather than go through the hassles of transporting weapons. for instance stopping for a pizza and beer with the guys on the way home from the club can get you jail time. you must proceed directly to and from the club with no stops along the way. do you realize that the us-cdn land border is 5900 miles long and in places up north still under debate. at 50 guard posts to the mile you would need 295,000 men to man the border per shift. doesn't seem all that practical does it. if you want to do something about illegal immigration start handing out fines of 10 grand for the first illegal employed and a grand a pop for every single one after the first. it's like dope if you don't attack the demand then you will never get anywhere trying to choke off the supply. mind you this will considerably increase the costs of fruit and veggies which require pickers.

Then dont get angry about the guns going north and the drugs going south. even you admit the price of fixing the problem is not worth the cost...

np you live you learn. thing is that human problems are almost never simple to solve. i've found over the years that people advocating "simple" solutions are at best seriously underinformed and more likely axe grinders of some sort.

i am rather more irate about the us ambassador telling us yet again that we need to "take steps" or that we aren't "doing enough" about something he's unhappy about that to us isn't a big concern. i think we would get along better if there was some give and take about our various concerns but our relationship pretty much consists of the states trying to tell us what to do and ignoring any of our concerns. one of the biggest pita at the moment is that lumber dispute and it's getting more press up here all the time. we've been through the full cycle to the bitter end and won a decisive ruling in our favour which the us has decided to blithely ignore. the ambassador says we should "negotiate" some more which we have done for years and years with no success. there are people advocating revoking the nafta treaty which commits us to treat the us as part of canada for oil supply and there are others who want to start putting a comparable tax on energy going south. others are talking about reviewing any american purchases of canadian firms etc. people here are getting po'ed about this sort of stuff.
