Subject: Voodoo ponderings
DropBear    11/20/2004 10:38:12 PM
Was the McDonnell Douglas F-101 Voodoo well liked in Canadian Air Force service? So many Century Jets were known for their accident rates and unhappy service. Your thoughts on its time in CAF....

I can't say how well it was liked, but I remember when I worked at the airport I got the 'special tour'. I saw an F-101 that was being serviced in one of the smaller hangars. I think it was owned privately, by an individual or company. That might say something about their service.

Odd, received an error when trying to post and when trying to view it after. Basically, I saw one at the airport being serviced in a hangar that I believe was owned privately by an individual or corporation. Might say something about their longevity, but I can't make any specific claims.

If this is working: I saw an f-101 that was getting some maintenance in a hangar when I was getting the special tour of my city's airport a few months ago. That may say something about the longevity of the aircraft.

My first ever airshow at Trenton when i was a kid a Voodoo did a low fast buzz of the airfield. It was the greatest thing I had ever seen. I can't beleive they allowed it. Rumours were that it smashed windows on the airbase. In my mind the Voodoo was a classic. In Canadian service it provided NORAD with a fast two engine interceptor for the far north where Russian bear bombers regularly tested North America's defences. The Voodoo was augmented by Canada's widowmaker the F-104 starfighter used buy the airwing based in Germany.

the 104 wound up it's career with the canadian air force as a ground attack aircraft. if you can imagine a less appropriate role for that bird you are one up on me.

Is it still in service or was it in private hands, being restored?? Were Voodoo's ever used as aggressors like F-5??

"the 104 wound up it's career with the canadian air force as a ground attack aircraft. if you can imagine a less appropriate role for that bird you are one up on me" hence why one of their nicknames was the "lawn dart"

I don't know much about the Voodoo; it was a large fighter jet wasn't it with a tiny armament of 3 Falcans or something wasn't it?

It certainly was a big boy! F-101B Interceptor: Length 20.55m wing span 12.09m weight empty 28,970lb max takeoff 52,400lb two P7W J57-P-55 turbojets 14,990lb in afterburner. It could carry four AIM-4 Falcon under fuselage, or two AIR-2A Genie nuke missiles. (similar to F-106 Delta Dart).
