Was it a quick decision out of the blue like the RAAF one?
It seemed we were able to cough up $2bn quickly and in a matter of months the first one landed.

think it's not many months till we get the first one. got an excellent offset in that while we are spending 3.4 billion i think they said on the planes there will be 3.4 billion worth of subcontracts etc built in canada.

Apparently we are just getting the four for $2bn. I guess that includes some engine spares and the training. No other industrial offsets are included.
Personally, I'd like to see two more to round them out nicely.
They are replacing twelve C-130H's.

that's one of the problems with buying bigger better whatevers. replace 12 with 4 and you can only then be in 4 places at any one time assuming that all 4 are operational at that time.
used to play a game with my friends about when the usaf would have just the one airplane. it'd be the scariest plane ever created but still one plane no matter how good just isn't gonna cut it in the real world.

Remember the 4 Globemasters have a greater payload than 16 C-130's, would have reduced operating costs due to fewer flights, fewer miles on the airframes, and fewer crews to fly them. Additionally the CF is tapped to buy 17 of the newer C-130J so we won't be losing the tactical lift, and have airframes our air and ground crews are familiar with.
The Air Force is also being given the nod on CH-47 Chinooks and don't be surprised if we also get some replacements for our aging SAR aircraft.
