Subject: Al-Qaeda renews threats to Canada over Afghanistan
Griffin    10/28/2006 7:28:58 PM
The National Post, ran a news article about the latest video release by the propaganda arm of al-Qaeda. In its diatribe, they called Canadian soldiers "Second Rate Crusaders". Well, since the video came out in early summer, these same troops have helped more than f few hundred Taliban buddies find out the meaing of our 'Second Rated' troops. With the arrival of the Lord Strathcona Horse Leopard 1C2 Main Battle Tanks, I do hope they try and concentrate again where we can help them join their brethren in ever greater numbers. the problem with being widely perceived as "nice" guys is that no one believes they can get their butts kicked.

i see in the paper today the army is looking at picking up 50 2nd hand leopard 2's.  be a lovely upgrade for the lads if it happens.

I thought I had read something not all that long ago about Canada planning on scrapping their Leopard MBTs.  Has NATO / Afghanistan changed some minds or did the army get the funding to keep them?   Or was is my memory just as bad as my typing?

I had heard that Canada was going to phase out the Leopard 1 (and about time really), and replace them with LAV's armed with a 76mm gun with the old Scorpian turrets. (eek!)

On a different note, why the smeg doesn't the West ban our mass-media from broadcasting enemy propoganda? And why the smeg are our mass-media so dumb as to broadcast enemy propoganda?

At least Al Qaeda knows what and where Canada is. I can recollect at least two instances where Al Qaeda has threatened death and destruction to the "crusader nation of Norway". A threat obviously meant for Denmark as Norway has an extremely low profile. It puzzled the Norwegians quite a bit. :D

But what. The luxury of obscurity. At least they didn't think Denmark was the capital of Sweden

The Stryker MGS is what you are thinking of.  The pox on the Liberals for that misgotten deed as they tried to deep six the Leo's.  The Conservatives according to the rumour mill are looking to 'toast' the MGS idea - a bad one at that for our small armour where we need extra muscle to offset small number - and they have now brought back out of retirement our Leo 1 C2's and deployed about 15 of them to Afghanistan.  Ongoing rumours also about us getting some German or Swedish Leopard 1A5's and with our Cdn. modifications bringing them up to Leo 2 capability in fire control, added armour, etc.  One recent news article pointed to some people at NDHQ thinking we didn't need tanks this summer.  Op Medusa may have changed a few minds.

SEE! This what I mean! The Swedes has never operated the Leo 1, so it can't bee them. It's probably Danish or Norwegian Leopard 1A5's (or German).

Btw, the FCS on the 1A5 is better than on the 2A4.

they were looking at being able to air freight some light armour to support peacekeeping missions i think.  lav's with mdm cannon turrets was the idea which is ok for that role but woefully lacking in real power.  still no more advancing russian hordes for us to throw ourselves under any more so i guess they figured they didn't need tanks anymore.  leo 1's are kinda thin skinned critters anyhow unlike 2's.

No, really I am thinking of a Canadian LAV with the 1960's vintage Scorpian 76mm turret. I even saw a picture of one, so I at least one exists.

I think they were to be used as trainers, and for peace keeping operations.

That is the Cougar.  It was originally designed as a tank trainer, but low and behold found itself operational.  The reserves had them also, but some if not all regiments were stripped of them and sent off to Sudan for the peacekeepers there.
