Subject: New Budget

well we saw the new budget yesterday and lo there was indeed increased funding for the military. significantly increased extra money even. props for carrying through on that at long bloody last. not so crazy about the horde of tax credits they introduced though. this is going to add at least a page to your tax return and a bunch more attachments etc. worse it's hard to get rid of stuff like that once it takes root in the tax code.

Well before you go too far, don't accept the $5.3-billion nonsense as the real budget number. This was just as deceiving as the Liberals increases that went well beyond any possible term of government in a minority situation. The money for the next 2-years, which maybe outside of this minority goverment surviving, is $1.1-billion for 2006/07 or what the Liberals gave in their 18-month term in office. Some have suggested that in addition to what was announced in the budget that through some creative shell game type of accounting specific monies outside of the budget - prior contigency funding or other sources - may be dipped into to get the Strategic heavy airlift, etc. Most believe that Harper was not going to lose a vote of confidence on the military and is biding his time and try to get a majority government so that he is less constrained. However, in this political consideration he may have also underestimated the level of cynicism in the CF about any politicians promises considering the last 40-years of let downs.

the truly depressing thing about being cynical is just how often you are proven correct.

Ehran, let us just hope that this is but a temporary blip and that IF they get re-elected with a majority government, they will move with dispatch in raising the CF's funding and making some of the critical institutional and legislative changes necessary to rebuild the CF.

Military fund up? LOL You'll see we buy C-17 and choppers, but not F-22 or F35 toys. Because C-17 and choppers are usful at peace time, but fighters and tanks are useless money drainages. We don't have a decent defense industry, so not like US their increase of defense budget can contribute to their GDP, but our increase only contributes to theirs. So, you won't see any big jump in defense budget any time soon.

I still think the federal government should try and reduce its debt. Where does all that GST money go anyway I think it generates 20 billion a year yet the government usually only puts a couple billion down to pay it off. In 20 years it could be paid off if they actually used the GST for the reason why they put it in then all revenues earned can go directly to the people not some interest on loans.

>>I still think the federal government should try and reduce its debt.<< I totally agree. Pay down the debt, get rid of GST, and cut tax.
