Subject: France vs Canada
SGTObvious    6/24/2003 4:50:55 PM
A few French folks have asked, "Why do Americans hate us so much when Canadians have the same attitudes we do"? Here's part of the reason why: The other day, I received a tourist brochure in the mail from New Brunswick. The "gist" of the brochure, summed up, is as follows: "New Brunswick is a very pretty place, with beautiful sea shores, friendly people, and tasty lobster, so if you come to visit, you will like it." Meanwhile, France would also like me to visit and spend money. What do they do? They hire Woody Allen- America's Whiniest Person. Woody Allen's commercial for France, again, to present the gist, is: "If you don't want to visit France it's because you are an ignorant person". Contrast: Canada: We're really nice, come visit. France: If you don't visit, it's because you're ignorant. Okay, folks, NOW does everyone understand why Americans are so much harder on France than Canada? Is it clear now?

yes we like the US dollars and the yanks are welcome in france , altough i foresee less US tourists this year . Woody Allen is ok in NYC but hated in the rest of USA. He's loved in France. We like all the americans who have the courage to say that their people is brute and uneducated for a great majority, and critisize Bush and his hawks. SgtO you can be considered having education ( sometimes you make mistakes but i am polite not to correct you.). let the canadians live their quiet life. They don't have a hawkish and stupid government to venerate. they are cool and peaceful.

Jean, Jean, where shall I start? You said, correctly: "Woody Allen is ok in NYC but hated in the rest of USA." And I ask you, knowing this, how could France select him as Tourism Spokesman, other than absolute French arrogance? Need more be said? And such a delightful combination of "yanks are welcome in france" along with "We like all the americans who have the courage to say that their people is brute". Irony? Or do the French not really understand what "welcome" means? Is it customary in France to invite and insult guests at the same time? "We would be happy to have you idiots over as our guests". How exactly will that theme help restore a dying tourism industry? (France has gone from a 90 million Euro monthly surplus with the US to a 200 million Euro deficit, as per the EU and the Economist, this is real, and American "brutes" will not be in a mood to change that) Did you at least notice my point: that Canada can be open to the US without being insulting? Is there an upper limit to French arrogance or does it merely keep increasing towards infinity?

Sarge, Of course the French are going to like Woody Allen. He's a filmmaker that married his adopted daughter, after raising her to be a good wife. He's the closest thing America has to Roman Polanski.

"canadians do not make as much fun of america as does canada" So are you saying that Canada makes fun of itself? Because if you mean that Americans make fun of Canadians, most Americans only think of "Canadian" when they see it on the label of their beer bottle. Americans, as a rule, don't make fun of Canadians any more than we make fun of ourselves. In the US it is usually the folks from the northeast poke fun at Southerners, Southerners of Yankees and everyone of Californians and blondes. It is nothing more than you guys telling Newfie jokes or comments about British California. So if we slip in a few "ehs" and bad accents, don't worry...its not personal. Hey, if "Grapes" can take it the rest of the country ought to, eh?
