Subject: Cdn. move out in force into Kandahar Province countryside

"Ehran:it seems the canadians have launched a several week show the flag exercise into injun country down near the pak border. guess they are trying to establish the fact that they won't be restricted by casualties." I started a new topic so as to not have thread drift in the other item. I believe there are now over 1,000 troops spreading out to put pressure on the Taliban and win over the 'hearts and minds' of the Afghan locals. No small job, as no doubt the people will fear that once the troops are gone the Taliban will re-emerge and punish those who helped the Canadian troops. Same old terrorist stuff. However, one has to start somewhere, and breaking down mistrust by doing some good PRT work should help. The problem with the country right now is the corruption and lack of a truly functional justice system that would stop Taliban and al-Qaeda types from bribing officials and getting out of jail if arrested by our troops. The other problem of course is the poppy situation and with warlords and drug traffickers and their supporters in the Afghan Parliament, this is going to be a very difficult problem to overcome.

long term the drug lords are going to be a bigger problem for 'stan than the rump elements of the taliban. i've read that about a third of the gnp revolves about the drug trade and it's a real growth industry. i don't think the 'stanis are going to be able to withstand the corrosive effects of the drug money for long. probably the best we can really hope for there is convincing the drug lords the taliban types are bad for business.

Did you guys happen to see the interview today with CDS Hillier on CTV's Question Period. I think he did a good job of setting Craig write on some issues. To be honest Cdn. have forgotten what real reporting was like and instead have gotten use to the newsies making the news and editorializing rather than giving a full and fair report. I was glad Hillier corrected Craig a number of times and glad that Lew Mackenzie held his own against that character Stephen what's his name from the Polaris Institute.
