The Blog "Captains Quarters" is live blogging the results, not much information yet. There is a law that no information can be made public until the last poll closes, so no real hard info until 10 est

There will be a change of Government in Canada. The Conservative party has won a minority. The new Primeminister of Canada will be Stephen Harper. Good news for the military.

Too bad it wasn't a majority. I had figured with as much government corruption that had taken hold in the previous liberal government, it would have put them over the top in getting a majority. Now, let's hope the conservatives don't follow in the liberal footsteps of corruption. Still as you say, it is good news for your military, indeed. Though, i'm sure... it will be an uphill battle for the conservatives too wring any type of money from the liberal's in parliament & their many social experiments. Thanks for the info.

harper is going to be on a pretty short leash with only the reluctance of the other parties to be seen as "causing" another election as leverage to get what he wants out of parliment. his only viable ally is the bloc and frankly that isn't going to be a marriage made in heaven given what his western base thinks of quebec by and large. they say harper has learned to compromise and this situation will certainly show whether that is true or not. i am inclined to think we'll be headed back to the polls in a year or so. interesting to see that the greens got 5% of the popular vote. another modest increase in popularity should see them elect an mp or two. it's also interesting that martin has resigned as leader of the libs. several potentially interesting candidates mulling over stepping up.

The Liberals will be in a rebuilding phase for a good part of this year. If they rushed it, I guess they could have a leadership convention by June, not likely in the summer, but who knows, and more probably by fall. Then again if they are in a rush to push Paul Martin out, now that he has stated his future plans do not included leading the Liberal Party, it may advance their deadlines to May-June 2006 timeframe. The voters would not be happy with them though if they then pushed for an election. That kind of takes the bounce after coming off a leadership convention. So I figure they may, (barring the Conservatives doing some stupid things), push a non-confidence motion in the first half of 2007. If that does in fact occur, and if the Conservatives work the system to their advantage, they could bring in popular legislation, get the Liberals who had approved increases in defence to come along with a few more $$$ and do like changes. That would give Harper his MP's a legislative track record, which may prove comforting to the electorate and allow him to call an election or force a non-confidence by the opposition.

i've heard talk the libs may hold off the leadership vote till their next convention in 14 months but do they dare wait so long? it would be truly embarassing to be caught with an interim leader if and when the tories have parliment blow up in their faces.
