Ty    8/20/2001 1:20:55 PM
Canada's military has got to such a sorry state of affairs ,I feel it cannot even fuction as a defence force for Canada.I feel if we had one North American Armed Forces(U.S,Canada and(God help us)Mexico)we could fuction better thoughout Noth Amer. and the world-with all three countries putting in their fair share, with the U.S having the largest voice in the organization. What do you think?

While the US and Canada could no doubt function well together- and have- what would be the point of adding Mexico? And what would US and Canadian generals do when told they had to stamp out a Zapatista rebellion?

That is more of a reason to include Mexico, the military could more easily respond to such things as-Zapatista rebellion; it also would have a stabilizing effect on Mexico as a whole.

I think these are very interesting ideas. We practically have a joint Canadian/US military now. They buy numerous arms from us, and if I'm not mistaken I think two of their primary combat aircraft are the F-18 and F-111. But I doubt if the many ultra-liberal politicians in Canada would ever be able to agree with the US on the use of any forces though. As for joining with Mexico, unlike many I have no quarrel with the quality of Mexican troops. Mexican soldiers are as brave and valiant as any you will ever meet, for example the Aztec Squadron of volunteers that fought for us in the Pacific in WW2. It is not their fault that they have been led by corrupt and incompetent leaders throughout their entire history until the recent election of President Fox, the first decent president the country's ever had. As far as fighting their wars though, I think we've learned our lesson about getting involved in somebody else's civil war. Mexico is changing though. One thing you won't read about in the US press are the huge colonies of retirees from the US which are springing up all over northern Mexico. The cost of living is much cheaper there and (I know this is the next question) yes there is plenty of health care, from US trained doctors.

It is very likely to happen indeed. The building of an "integrated North American economic zone", necessarily extending into the political and military fields, is just a reaction to the construction of Europe. The US is pressing the point and forcing Canada and Mexico to adhere. Malrait

Jay is right in saying that Canada’s air force uses the F-18 however they only have about 120 total, and that basically makes up their entire fighter force, which has less firepower then the US Air National Guard. Although I do not doubt the bravery of the Mexican soldiers, I admit to having reservations as to their integrity considering how many reports are coming out of Mexican military units working with drug cartels. Furthermore, I share Ben’s reservations concerning the Zapatista rebellion. In addition, I doubt that the majority of Mexico would be so welcoming of US military assets being placed on their territory considering the history. On the other hand, under NORAD US and Canadian forces have working together has functioned relatively well. I would like to ask though, what would be in this for the US? However, in the end, I feel that this whole discussion is rendered academic by one simple fact. The whole concern behind Ty’s suggestion is that Canada would be incapable of defending itself. Well rest easy our neighbors to the north. Under Article 5 of the NATO treaty, which Canada is a signatory; an attack on Canada is considered an attack on the US. It is also considered an attack on The UK, Spain Portugal, Luxembourg, Belgium, Netherlands, Denmark, Germany, Italy, Greece, Turkey, Hungary, Poland, Norway, Iceland, Czech Republic, and depending on the week France. Needless to say, Canada will not have to stand-alone.

Who is going to attack Canada anyway? Why do they even need an army, except to defend other people, eg UK which they have done in two world wars and for which we are very grateful.

John said "Who is going to attack Canada anyway? Why do they even need an army, except to defend other people" Actually the same can be said for the US nowadays. Canada and the other NAFTA members share a large moat (IE Pacific and Atlantic Oceans) The FACT is that US military forces like Canadian ones are used to "Show the Flag" abroad and have little domestic use(ok they put out fires). But in reality our territorial boundaries are protected by the Coast Guard and the Air National Guard. Of course the fact that the two units by themselves are more powerful than those armies of some 150+ UN members is beside the point. Remember peace time armies always look fat and overbudgeted till you have to call on them.

Hi Vulture, I think you are absolutely right, the US forces aren't needed to protect the integrity of the US. I guess you can afford it, but you guys do spend a huge amount on defense. Personally I don't like the government spending my money, I'd rather spend it myself. I earned it after all. But it's none of my business since I'm not an American.

This has got to be the dumbest discussion, I mean A.) There are enough people in Mexico and Canada who're as proud and nationalistic as anybody in the US who'd basically revolt to prevent what they'd see as an annexation by the US. B.) As brought up previously, who is invading Canada? Aside from being part of NATO, and being best friends with the biggest guy on EARTH, what, are the Brits going to invade to get Newfoundland back? The Russians (you know, the guys who sold their pot-to-piss-in to the Chinese?)?
