Subject: How would you sink a Nimitz class carrier??
Herc the merc    1/19/2005 11:00:27 AM
Which torpedoes or cruise missiles could do this effectively, or would it require several. Some of the ASHM simply do not have the fire power to do it alone, torpedoes are also small, and the subs can be detected. Whats the best plan??

"i wonder if the inscrutible chinese have purchased some AAML off the russians? go for the E2 and awacs assests first, then the tankers." -- AndyF ---- No. The Russians don't have any, and the Chinese don't either. In fact, no one does. Displacedjim

US torpedoes already have quad processing power rated at approx 14 gigaflops They use PowerPC processors already. A PS2 processor would be "de-rating" current ability

I do not propose to stop ELINT, photo recon, or other "national technical means" because we do not benefit from them. Au contraire, I think we need to invest more in analysis of the vast amount of data gathered by these means, so we no longer tend to figure out something long AFTER it matters. I only challenge your assertion that we cannot get the data by other means, and surprisingly often within a matter of hours, in this age. When the Royal Marines stood up in 1981, the first thing the commander told his intel officer to do was "go to the public library" - before reporting to headquarters. I also challenge your assertion that we have the best scientific and technical intelligence in the world. According to a deputy director of one of our agencies, this is quite untrue, if only because we are not properly organized. "We collect almost everything there is to know about almost everything on the planet. And we can tell you almost nothing about its significance in time enough to matter." Thinking that our bureaucracy has produced a near perfect countermeasure for every enemy weapon may make for sounder sleep by fighter pilot, but it might be better to teach our pilots to think in terms of being ready for the sight of missiles boring in completely ignoring those countermeasures. What should they do in that case? There usually are things that will mitigate the threat. Being trained to think in terms of them may help one apply them in time.

You are right Kaydet - 50 year old ships not well maintained by crews not doing proper damage control will not do well - with ANY kind of weapon hits.

Diego Garcia is NOT near Taiwan. Guam is. And it is 6 B-52s. We are thinking of 6 more in 2006. The problem is - there are not many bombers total in Strike Command. [56 combat ready B-52 out of a total force of 93 B-52H]

Not sure what you are smoking, Spudman, but 4 B-2s and 8 B-52s cannot wipe out a true invasion fleet - unless they use nuclear weapons. At times we have total weapon inventory problems, and we ALWAYS have available in theater weapon inventory problems such that we are not going to be wiping out any major invasion fleets without waiting for more to ship in or be manufactured. Most military professionals think we will end up closing to visual range and using iron bombs, guns, etc.

What is wrong with Tigerfish? She is still in service, and regarded by some as the best in the world. [Of course, we say that about Mk 48 and others say that about their favorite]. But clearly Tigerfish is a modern torpedo, nothing like a classical one.

Your point is lost because it won't load. This can happen on this board. Your post on fighting unmobilized was...???

The fleet units are based at Yokosuka on Honshu, Japan. The amphibs (and a destroyer squadron) are at Sasebo on Kyushu, Japan. A baby version of Third Marine Division is on Okinawa. Equipment for a brigade of Marines is on preposition ships at Guam, along with 3 SSNs. Most of Fleet Air, Western Pacific is at Atsugi, Japan. The force is 1 CV, 2 CG, 4 DDG, 2 FFG, 1 LHD, 3 LSD, 1 AOE, 2 AF, 1 AE and one salvage tug. The fleet probably would stay well east of Taiwan until more units arrived in the area.
