Subject: How would you sink a Nimitz class carrier??
Herc the merc    1/19/2005 11:00:27 AM
Which torpedoes or cruise missiles could do this effectively, or would it require several. Some of the ASHM simply do not have the fire power to do it alone, torpedoes are also small, and the subs can be detected. Whats the best plan??

to be an effective EMP a nuke has to detonate at suborbital height. i think 60 km was talked about. so that the Compton effect can generate the pulse

Opinion, one week old, from a senior US military intelligence officer: "The nature of the value of open source materials has changed in a truly revolutionary way. The combination of millions of international travelers (something present in no previous era) and the internet wholly changes the nature of what can be collected. Formal intelligence institutions have not yet come to terms with the implications of this. When they do, we may be able to dramatically increase our effective intelligence gathering on a fraction of the budget."

Already happened. If for some political reason formal units cannot be used for somethign (say a rescue mission), and contractors are used, even if they are given technical data from official agencies (of whatever country - some countries will sell this stuff - notably Italy), it is quite common to go collect the technical data independently, to be sure the official data is still valid - and not contaminated with disinformation. Most people regard the current material as much more reliable than official, even if it turns out the official data was perfect. Official data is not uniformly perfect, and it never hurts to confirm it, even if you have it. If you can't get it - it is no big deal - you can get the data anyway - 99% of the time.

How about this: The Belgrano was NOT sunk with a modern torpedo!!!! Conks skipper did not trust his Tigerfish - he used a WWII strait runner - with contact exploder.

Naw, the skipper said he had fired a Tigerfish a few weeks earlier - and the wire broke and she circled back at the sub! He didn't want to do that with an ARMED torpedo. So he wanted torpedoes that ONLY ran AWAY from his sub.

More like WWI TDS. But it was quite good. No ONE torpedo could sink her. Four on one side should, on the average day.

Cannot be 60 km. EMP happened in atmospheric tests, and none of the bombers used could even theoretically reach 60 km. The data for each US test is available in US Nuclear Weapons if you want to look it up.

Two hits would be a serious problem for a Brooklyn with proper damage control. But she should have floated, and been towable (the tail hit may have taken out all propulsion).
