Subject: Removal of Harpoon from USN
Iano    12/31/2004 7:27:24 AM
Has Harpoon really been removed from the USN's surface vessels? I'm no expert but to me that seems crazy. If you are going to sea with only ESSM and Standard (point and area air defence), then essentially your ships are capable only of defending themselves from the air. If they cant undertake aggressive or offensive action, and no other navy has the size to, say, attack the US mainland, which would neccessitate a defensive force, then what is the point of having surface combatants in the USN? How can you project power around the globe if you cant even hit anyone? Or is the idea of all your frigates, destroyers and cruisers simply to provide defence for your aircraft carriers, which will provide offensive capability for the whole group? So what is the doctrine anyway? Ian

I remember reading in AVWEEK a couple years ago about a program to develop a supersonic SSM but it was intended for ground rather than sea surface targets. Perhaps SM-6 will have that capability while the new 5inch62 was mentioned of having the potential for antiship rounds while the 155mm/52 caliber AGS could have an antishipping round also. I would like to see the IR homing AA shell revived for both guns for if there is anything needed it is all the ASMD one can afford. Harpoon might be mounted in canisters forward of the bridge perhaps on a platform if stability margins were availible which I doubt but if the remaining below decks magazine retained for stability was removed and replaced with ballast that might be possible;ballast weight would have to be less than magazine weight yet be enough to maintain stability while allowing increased growth margin. Proceedings magazine suggested mounting MK 45 gun in place of missile magazine.

I think what we are going to see in the next generation of systems is the complete blurring of the lines between what is an anti-ship missile, land attack missile, anti-aircraft missile etc. Already those lines are getting a bit fuzzy.

Iano, The Turkish ship you mentioned was accidentally  hit by an anti-air missile during a war game was place out of action and latter scrapped. The USA had to pay reparations to the Turks and replace the ship. So I agree with you that an anti-air missile designed to bring down an aircraft has enough punch to seriously cripple a war ship. Just like you said it is the combination of the warhead and the unspent fuel plus the delicate nature of modern ship's componentry. And another thing that you are right about is logistics... in Naval fighting if a missile can be used for a dual purpose and thus simplifying logistic and increasing the flexibility of the ship that is an important plus.
