"Range and RCS mean little if you aren't bringing a big enough warhead to the fight (IIRC, USS Stark didn't sink, and how long did HMS Sheffield remain afloat?)."

These ships, even those which were not sunk, were mission killed. I guess that is what matters really.
Exocet, even earlier versions, is a successful missile, and remains a deadly threat for any ship. But that's the case of every antiship missile, and i guess the real question is not "which missile is more effective" but "can modern antiship missiles really be countered by current defense systems".

It was here that we learned how much the US were concerned by supersonic russians antiship missiles.

The fact that hizbullah managed to use a silkworm against the israeli flagship (with succes, because of incompetency of the israeli crew/intelligence as the defense system was shut down) underlines the fact that such missiles can be used by terrorists. I would like to know how the defense system would have performed if powered up.

Currently, in the eternal combat between the sword and the shield, i think that the sword has the edge!!

If you bother to try and find other SP articles on the issue of supersonics then you'll see that its been comprehensively disected.

The USN trained against Mach 6 supersonics during the cold war - and against an enemy that was in a position to throw regiments of aircraft at the fleet.  The USN was confident of surviving then - the counter systems and sensor systems avail today are far more capable.

That article was rubbish. (and I certainly regard it as a classic example of the US building up a threat opportunity to secure funding for some of their projects)  They were playing to congress.
