Subject: Tamil Tigers

The Tamil Tigers are one of the most successful militant insurgent groups on the face of the planet at the moment... 20+ years of operations, somewhat successful negotiations with the hostile government, and a list of successful assassinations that I found impressive. Yet it's hard to locate much information on them... numbers, tactics, equipment.... probably this is on purpose. However, I'd like to learn as much as possible about them. Does anyone have some suggestions for sources of information beyond the usual brief news articles? Websites, books recent enough to still be accurate...?

With biggest battle after World War II records LTTE is one of the interesting organization to study. Very interesting interms of their covert and battle tatics. Take an example, Being a rebel organization, when they started they immediatly assigned fake names to their cadres. Not many rebel organizations do this. Furthermore, it is said that their plan are 10 years before-hand. They are said to live without any support of outside governments but it seems the US and the India likes them regardless they both naming LTTE terrorists.

the tigers had help from india in several occasions, from the beginning they trained them and armed them as well..... until instinct took over the LTTE and the assasinated the prime minster of India, Rajiv Ghandi. Since then the Govt. of india did not help them as frequently as they used to though the LTTE still got help from external sources of India.

Pakistan will soon own Sri Lanka. All Sri Lankans must convert to Islam or they will vanquish.

Yeah! Everytime an ethnic group tries to divide a country that's what I would call them. Terrorists. And the interesting part is those people (Tamils) already have their own country: India. Stop killing those people and go back to India!!!

>> The Tamil Tigers are one of the most successful militant insurgent groups on the face of the planet at the moment... 20+ years of operations, somewhat successful negotiations with the hostile government, and a list of successful assassinations that I found impressive. << Gulp...I wouldnt call asassinations of public officials and leaders "impressive" -- especially when carried out through suicide bombing. >> Yet it's hard to locate much information on them... numbers, tactics, equipment.... probably this is on purpose. << Numbers range between 8-12,000 fighters plus double that in terms of passive sleepers. Tactics is similar to ones carried out by mercenaries in South/Central Africa in 1960s with two notable exceptions (a) invented suicide bombings (b) their tactics are counter-counter-insurgencies {probably the most difficult form to fight, since they learnt from counter-insurgency specialists}. Equipment is mainly Chinese Type-56s, RPGs, Zu AA's, IEDs (Semtex base), some helos and mainly improvised dingys and speed-boats.
