There are 30,000-32,000 child labors in Nepal and more than 2,500 in the country's capital Kathmandu alone, according to an evaluation report issued by the Child Development Society (CDS) in Nepal, the independent English daily The Kathmandu Post reported Monday. The evaluation was based on an action plan named "Towards the Elimination of Child Labor in Selected Districts" implemented by the CDS with the help of two international organizations, the International Labor Organization and the International Program on Elimination of Child Labor, the daily quoted the report as saying. "1,363 child labors were found in the selected areas of the action plan, that is in the brickkilns and stoneyards in Bhaktapurand Dhading districts," the report said. "The two-year action plan was aimed at arousing the parents andtheir children's awareness of education as well as children's right, health and safety," the report noted, adding that "more than 400 children have directly benefited from the plan." The report found that the action plan has been successful in raising awareness, providing better educational opportunities to child labors at factory areas and mobilizing civil society organizations to run educational activities. The plan has also been partly successful in improving the situation of child labors and preventing them from hard work. For example, a child who used to work for the whole day is now workingonly for two hours a day or only on holidays, the report added.
