Subject: Will there be a new Korean War?
gcw1995    6/1/2005 7:55:06 AM
I would like other opinions on the possibility of a future Korean War. Who will be involved? How do we(U.S.)win? Is it better to first strike from the sea? How many casualties? Would the North use nuclaer weapons? I don't believe that they would. For fear of an outstanding alliance of nations to retaliate. I would like other opinions to this subject.

"book is called "Red Phoenix". Excellent book." It was a fun book, but I don't see it being a realistic scenerio. The Displaced One I think has accurately portrayed the likely scenerios. "North Korea probably could advance a pretty good distance inside of South Korea before the US halts their progression." People seem to have a habit of discounting the ROK troops while giving the North Koreans a lot of (in my opinion) undeserved credit. I doubt the North Koreans could manage an advance, these days, much beyond the range of their artillery and air defense cover along the DMZ. That advance would also likely be very costly. The ROK is perfectly capable of defending it own territory without the help of the US, at least in my opinion. The only purpose the US really serves in Korea today is an added bit of discouragement. Part of that discouragement being that there "could" be a counter offensive that would drive back up to the Yalu.

Interestingly, there is some way that the CCP may invade North Korea unilaterally if they know that North Korea is going to invande South Korea. The CCP know that DPRK would commit suicide by invading ROK, and inviting US troops and ROK military to topple notorious Kim dynasty. Therefore, before DPRK does anything stupid, the CCP will do anything to raise a puppy state in the north.

"Therefore, before DPRK does anything stupid, the CCP will do anything to raise a puppy state in the north. " Now that's an interesting thought. Anyone know if the DPRK keeps anything much above a border guard along the Chinese border? Or do you think if the PLA threatened them enough, the North Korean generals would just drag Kim into the street and give him some 9mm attitude adjustments?

They are all commies after all, and they don't follow Geneva convention. What you can expect is mass murder and gigantic quantity of death. What the CCP may do is to physically control DPRK. Kim, dead or alive, doesn't even matter to the CCP. The only line for the CCP on invading DPRK is that they won't make DPRK a province of China. As for the rest, there would be no rules. I have heard that ROK has a plan to take over DPRK when DPRK collapses. Too bad for ROK, PLA also has a similar plan.

"Anyone know if the DPRK keeps anything much above a border guard along the Chinese border?" Only enough NK troops are present to capture/shoot refugees trying to get across the river. NK put all of it's goodies on the southern border.

It doesn't matter how many troops has DPRK stationed alone Chinese border. Without fuel, which is provided by China for the whole decade, DPRK troops are sitting ducks even for PLA.
