Well, Hangin, would have thought a patriot like you would call it Tim Tim! Maybe they are in PNG and East Timor but I suspect not - I would imagine there would be intelligence operatives but why Kopussus? Wouldn't want to get caught - big problem. Chinese training would help but still isn't quite to the same standard. While civilian links are being re-established with Australia at a rapid pace I am not sure if we will see Kopussus soldiers back at Campbell Barracks for some time. Please feel free to post in English. Might be able to get a few others in on the thread then! Shawn can undoubtedly read yours and a lot of the aussies also as you are kindly using Australian high school Indonesian but there are probably a lot of others that cannot. Or maybe you could post in both languages - provide a learning opportunity for those that want it...

Seriously, I have reservations on the quality of the entire TNI. The navy ships are pretty run down, and at least half are laid up. The Air Force is a bit of a joke... the F-16s are barely flying, and usually used for air displays, and the SUs apparently were not purchased with weapons. The army is poorly trained. Singapore conducts a lot of joint exercises with Indo infantry, and I've never heard that they were good quality troops... in fact, guys who've done exercises with Indo troops tell me that they have less initiative than Singapore conscripts, and need need greater supervision. Kompassus has a fearsome reputation. But this reputation is based on past glories and a current lax 'attitude' to proper etiquette and conduct during anti-insurgent and civil order operations.

"Kompassus has a fearsome reputation. But this reputation is based on past glories and a current lax 'attitude' to proper etiquette and conduct during anti-insurgent and civil order operations.' Perhaps, but again, it all boils down to money. If Indonesia plunks down the money (perhaps helped by the billions in aid money for aceh, as they are supposed to have done) it would be able to re-equip and retrain them fairly fast. Unlike singapore, which does play training, kopassus actually is involved in insurgency operations in Irian Jaya, Aceh, and probably several other little hot spots....no training like reality... The indonesian economy is also starting to move again at around 5%-6% per year growth after the Thai meltdown in 1997, which will definitely help.

The $1bn donated in Australian aid is jointly managed by both Indon and Australian teams - it can't be used for anything but aid - and is signed off by both Sby and Howard to ensure that inapprop use is avoided.

"The $1bn donated in Australian aid is jointly managed by both Indon and Australian teams" yeah, but remember indo is getting hundreds of billlions in aid (i think) from the rest of the world...that sure is a lot of money....i'm sure some is getting lost in the cracks...
