Subject: How to be saved

Ever wonder what happens after this life? What does God want for you? God’s Love and Purpose God loves you and desires that you have eternal life. “This is good and acceptable in the sight of God our Savior, who desires all men to be saved and to come to the knowledge of the truth.” – 1 Timothy 2:3-4 (NASB) “We have come to know and have believed the love which God has for us. God is love, and the one who abides in love abides in God, and God abides in him.” – 1 John 4:16 (NASB) God wants us to live forever, but something separates us from God and keeps us from having eternal life. What is causing the division? Our Problem: Separation and Judgment Sin. Sin separates us from God. We were created with the ability to choose. However, we choose to disobey God and instead to continually sin. “For all have sinned and fall short of the glory of God.” – Romans 3:23 (NASB) “But your iniquities have made a separation between you and your God, and your sins have hidden His face from you so that He does not hear.” – Isaiah 59:2 (NASB) Because of our sins, we cannot get into heaven. God said only those with “clean hands and a pure heart” are able to get into heaven (Psalm 24:3-4) Sin makes our hands dirty and our hearts impure. Therefore, we are not able to get into heaven. Because of our sin, we deserve punishment. “For the wages of sin is death…” – Romans 6:23a (NASB) God wants to forgive you, but he must also punish sin. “And according to the Law, one may almost say, all things are cleansed with blood, and without shedding of blood there is no forgiveness.” – Hebrews 9:22 (NASB) As you can see, in order to be forgiven, punishment must take place. God’s Provision: Christ God provides a way to satisfy both justice and his desire to forgive you. “All of us like sheep have gone astray, each of us has turned to his own way; but the LORD has caused the iniquity of us all to fall on Him.” – Isaiah 53:6 (NASB) “For God so loved the world, that He gave His only begotten Son, that whoever believes in Him shall not perish, but have eternal life. For God did not send the Son into the world to judge the world, but that the world might be saved through Him. He who believes in Him is not judged; he who does not believe has been judged already, because he has not believed in the name of the only begotten Son of God.” – John 3:16-18 (NASB) “But God demonstrates His own love toward us, in that while we were yet sinners, Christ died for us.” – Romans 5:8 (NASB) Jesus took the punishment. Jesus died on the cross and rose from the grave to pay the penalty of sin. Jesus bridges the chasm separating us from God. God provided the only way to be saved. The only way to get to heaven is through Jesus Christ. The good news is that this gift is offered to whomever will accept it. This gift is given freely out of God’s love and grace. “Jesus said to him, ‘I am the way, and the truth, and the life; no one comes to the Father but through Me.’” – John 14:6 (NASB) “And there is salvation in no one else; for there is no other name under heaven that has been given among men by which we must be saved.” – Acts 4:12 (NASB) “…but the free gift of God is eternal life in Christ Jesus our Lord.” – Romans 6:23b (NASB) We cannot earn this gift. We don’t deserve it. However, we can have it if we accept it. “But God, being rich in mercy, because of His great love with which He loved us, even when we were dead in our transgressions, made us alive together with Christ (by grace you have been saved), and raised us up with Him, and seated us with Him in the heavenly places in Christ Jesus, so that in the ages to come He might show the surpassing riches of His grace in kindness toward us in Christ Jesus. For by grace you have been saved through faith; and that not of yourselves, it is the gift of God; not as a result of works, so that no one may boast.” – Ephesians 2:4-9 (NASB) Our Response: Repent and Believe You can be forgiven and be saved if you believe in Jesus as your savior. God promises that whoever confesses and believes in Jesus will be saved. How to receive Christ: Receiving Christ is as easy as A-B-C. A – Admit your sins You must first repent of your sins. This means turning away from them and asking God to forgive you. “Therefore repent and return, so that your sins may be wiped away, in order that times of refreshing may come from the presence of the Lord.” – Acts 3:19 (NASB) B – Believe and confess What does it mean to believe? It means to trust your life to Jesus. If you jump out of a falling airplane with a parachute, you don’t just know or hope the parachute will save you. You believe it! You trust your life to the parachute. Similarly, believing in Jesus means trusting your eternal life to him. “They said, ‘Believe in the Lord Jesus, and you will be saved, you and your household.’” – Acts 16:31 (NASB) “That if you confess with your mouth Jesus as Lord, and believe in your heart that God raised Him from the dead, you will be saved; for with the heart a person believes, resulting in righteousness, and with the mouth he confesses, resulting in salvation.” – Romans 10:9-10 (NASB) “For whoever will call on the name of the Lord will be saved.” – Romans 10:13 (NASB) C – Call on Jesus as your savior Through prayer, invite Jesus to come in and change your life through the Holy Spirit. Invite him to save you. If you sincerely prayed and received Jesus into your life, God has done something wonderful for you! “Therefore, having been justified by faith, we have peace with God through our Lord Jesus Christ.” – Romans 5:1 (NASB) “He who has the Son has the life; he who does not have the Son of God does not have the life. These things I have written to you who believe in the name of the Son of God, so that you may know that you have eternal life.” – 1 John 5:12-13 (NASB)
