The 24 bodies were recovered after clashes late Monday and early Tuesday that also left 20 rebels dead in the tribal Dantewada area of Chhattisgarh state, one of several states in India where the left-wing militants are active. "We will go after the 300 to 400 insurgents who are hiding in the jungle," said police official R.K. Vij, who is tasked with rooting out rebel hideouts in Dantewada, 500 kilometres (310 miles) south of the state capital Raipur. "We will not spare them," he said. State security officials have said a savage gun battle broke out after more than 100 troops set out late Monday to search for a suspected Maoist camp. "It looks like it was a set-up," a federal home ministry official, who asked not to be named, told AFP Tuesday, referring to what appeared to be a well-planned ambush. Officials said the soldiers appeared to have been outnumbered by five to one. Police said Wednesday that all the troops had now been accounted for. Survivors described a vicious firefight with guerrillas armed with automatic weapons. "There are no missing troops now," police official S.L. Baghel told AFP from Dantewada on Wednesday. Some 150 troops were sent Wednesday to comb through the jungle near the assault site, Baghel added, but state officials would not disclose the number of forces they planned to deploy in the coming days. The Maoist rebels, who launched their campaign in 1967 and operate in 14 of India's 29 states.
