Subject: Germany for southern Afghanistan?
Guardsman 7207    9/7/2006 7:50:00 AM
Germany has ever since the end of WW2 sought to avoid sending their troops into very dangerous missions. Usually they favour going to the quiet spots or just send support personnel, logistics, field hospitals etc. But in a recent article in Der Spiegel at http://service.spiegel.de/cache/international/0,1518,434165,00.html there is a question if the times when Germany can reserve itself from such operations is ending. The question then becomes: is Germany capable of this? Do they have the qualifications for high intensity operations?

Would the Taliban get the message if the German troops all wore "SS" on their collars?

Guardsman 7207    Move on...?   9/7/2006 12:58:46 PM
Isn't it about time we move on from the ww2/nazi references when discussing the German military?
Really isn't relevant, and completely distorts the discussion...

But that might again show why the Germans are hesitant with getting involved, since everyone DO make the nazi connection...

I meant that comment in a positive, menacing way towards the Talibums.

I don't think there is that much resentment against Germany using their military in a multinational context. So why not. They can't reserve themselves anymore on grounds of WW2, and it should not become an excuse. Opinion has the reservation that Danes, like me, don't see Germans as enemies anymore. They have self-flagellated enough now.

They can do high intensity if they have to. They have the kit and the training, so what the f... are they waiting for?

Guardsman 7207    Self-flaggelation   9/8/2006 5:47:39 AM
I think there is still something to the self-flaggelation theory...

As it is, it seems like the Germans are almost afraid of what will happen if they change their military stance... almost like it was some sort of pandora's box, and noone wants to be first opening it. They definetely have the hardware, hardly anyone in Europe have better hardware than the Germans, but what they may be lacking is the combat experience...

Still, I know MBT's may not be very practical not much needed in Afghanistan, but I would like to see the Taliban reaction if a battalion of Leo2-A6's came rolling along:P Not to mention the firepower of a battery of Pzh 2000's...
