Subject: UK Manpads

Most countries us IR seeker for Manpads why does the UK choose to use Laser Guided.! Do the UK mistrust IR tech! Cannot see the true advantages Laser has over IR when you compare the disadvantages!

The laser tracking might be done seperately from firing the missile, which make possible different tactics.

You can fire the thing and immediately get to safety, while someone else tracks your missile from a hard to detect position.

No, I think that with laser beam riders, the beam needs to eminate from the launcher. Remember that these missiles are laser bean riders, not semi active laser homers like a Hellfire ...
Also remember that not only the UK use laser beam rider LOS MANPADs.

I am wondering whether laser beam riding LOS SAMs might become more not less widely used in the immediate future due to the growth of low IR signature stand off weapons like the JSOW glide bomb. Admitedly the SAM needed to engage these would more likely be a vehicle mounted SHORAD, not a MANPAD.

well, look at the footage of the flares being dropped behind transports
laser guided kinda makes all that moot
