Subject: Tracking stealth aricraft

In movies and hows about steath aircraft they always say how it's "radar signiture is reduced to the size of a small bird" isn't it easy to proram a radar to detect a small bird moving at 100mph + and designate it as a hostile ?

Passive stealth will remain a huge advantage for decades.

linking a couple of threads here...

what are the thoughts on the article about S400 being deployed and the claims that it can track stealth aircraft?

Yes, S-400 is close to finally entering service.  It's an awesome SAM system, and anybody caught in its "sights" is in big trouble.  Looks like we definitely won't want to fly around Moscow.  Far more troubling to me (since I can't imagine why we would ever want to fly around Moscow) is the definitely possibility that in five to ten years the Chinese will get some and put them down across from Taiwan.  The S-300PMU-1 can reach out nearly to Taiwan and S-300PMU-2 could actually cover the entire Strait.  S-400 could threaten high-altitude airspace even over the Pacific beyond Taiwan!

I'm sure the early warning and target acquisition radars associated with the S-400 can track stealthly aircraft.  Many radars can track stealth aircraft.  Please refer to my earlier posts.  I bet we would not want to fly within 50km of an S-400 battalion, and possibly need to stay even further away than that.  Thankfully we have a wide assortment of weaponry with ranges longer than that.

Are there any Russkie weapons that have lived up to there potential?  I can only think of a few.  Most of the hyperbole about the new SAM is exactly that.

can you think of anyones weapons that live up to the hyperbole?
'the m16 needs no cleaning, its jam proof'
'the M1 abrams is invulnerable to rpgs'
'the f3 tornado can dogfight'
everyone does it
I tend to think that the s400 is probably capable of doing for stealth planes

Regardless of whatever might be the hyperbole about it, the S-400 will be the most capable and deadliest SAM system in the world once it finally makes it into operation.  Yes, certainly it can "do for" stealth aircraft if the stealth aircraft flies close enough.  Even the SA-3 is capable of doing for stealth aircraft when you fly well within 20km of it, as the one F-117 lost in Serbia proves.  Using radars to track and engage a stealth aircraft is no different than using radars to track and engage any other aircraft.  Stealth just reduces the range at which you can track and engage it--sometimes to zero when some sort of physical limit is reached, otherwise to how ever much less is dictated by the physics of attempting to track and engage a target with a smaller RCS.

Personally I think the hype around the S400 system hearkens to the days of the coldwar over estimation of system capabilities and modern day quality  advertising on part of the Russians.

But as with everything else when it comes to the S400 or other such systems all judgements are based on speculation and manufacturers claims.

You have to admit though the Russians can creat some impressive video advertisements for their systems.

He knows his subject. The S-400s' radars are a worrisome threat to any low observable aircraft.

Thankfully there is a defect in the Russian S-400 system that the USAF can exploit that is endemic to any radar based air defense system.
