Subject: S-300PMU2 Favorit to Syria?
Shirrush    1/19/2007 9:25:26 AM
An unconfirmed, and less-than-reliable source (http://www.debka.com/article.php?aid=1249) claims that Iran will pay US$ 2.4G for four "Grumble" battalions in Syria. My question: how can a reasonably decent, but decidedly non-stealth air force deal with a SAM threat that has a range which covers most of its home airspace, at the same time as its own airbases are under constant heavy artillery rocket bombardment? This is NOT a theoretical thread. I'm inquiring about tactical/technological options that stand a strong chance of being implemented, soon!

Sounds like a good time for the weapons like the 'Affordable Weapon' cruise missile (c.$200k each), and the Netfires LAM in cruise missile mode. Basically, you just flood the enemy with targets, and ensure that enough missiles get through to do real damage. For around a billion dollars (cheap if it helps save your country!), you could launch 5000+ cruise missiles, and hope for the best, using ECM to maximise the chances of missiles hitting their targets. The real pain will be having the Syrians constantly 'painting' Israeli aircraft, both military and civil, making airlines wary of flying into Israeli airspace.

You go in with your own ground troops (rockets, artillery, commandoes) to take out a few S-300 positions. Then you send in the cruise missiles and planes into the gap(s) to hit the important stuff using the usual air defense suppression methods. Then you move in with more ground troops to take out the other S-300 or at least keep them on the run.
