Subject: Bush Stall on Taiwan F-16s
Softwar    5/9/2008 8:53:50 AM
http://www.washingtontimes.com/article/20080509/NATION04/52232777 Taiwan F-16s The Bush administration is divided over plans to sell Taiwan advanced F-16 jets, with the State Department opposing the sale and the U.S. military favoring the transfers. Defense officials say the U.S. Pacific Command, which is in charge of U.S. forces in Asia and would lead any U.S. defense of Taiwan from Chinese attack, wants the White House to approve the sale and do so sooner rather than later because of the growing imbalance of military forces in the area. Taiwan's air force currently flies about 150 F-16A/B model jet fighters that were purchased in 1992. Taiwan in May 2006 told the U.S. government that it wants to buy 66 F-16C/D models to counter a growing Chinese missile and aircraft threat across the Taiwan Strait. China has some 1,000 missiles within range of Taiwan and also has Russian-made Su-27 jets armed with advanced missiles in the area. But State Department officials want the sale postponed in order to avoid upsetting China prior to the Olympic Games, saying that Beijing already is angry at the protests that have dogged the worldwide Olympic torch relay over its military crackdown on Tibet. These officials want to delay the F-16 sales until after the games or later. China considers Taiwan a renegade province and calls U.S. arms sales an interference in its internal affairs. The Pentagon's latest annual report to Congress on the Chinese military, made public in March, stated that China continues to deploy its most advanced weapons, including missiles and aircraft, opposite Taiwan. The report said the Chinese military expansion is shifting the cross-Strait military balance in Beijing's favor. Taiwan's legislature last year approved a long-awaited defense spending budget of $8.9 billion for 12 P-3 anti-submarine patrol craft, six Patriot anti-missile system upgrades and sea-launched surface-to-air missiles. However, the State Department is blocking or slowing Taiwanese plans to purchase eight submarines, Patriot missiles and Apache attack helicopters. The arms sales slowdown is backed by the White House National Security Council staff, which has been quietly behind the gradual shift over the last several years away from support for Taiwan in favor of backing Beijing on most policy issues. A Pacific Command spokesman declined to comment. "This administration if fully prepared to live up to its obligations under the Taiwan Relations Act to provide Taiwan military capabilities to defend itself," said National Security Council spokesman Gordon Johndroe. "We will work with the new leadership in Taiwan, once in place, to ascertain their defense needs. It is premature to talk about any specific new defense sales for Taiwan until the new defense team on Taiwan is in place."

And we are blamed for not taking defense of our freedom seriously!

All these talking about not angering commies before and during Olympics, waiting for new ROC president inauguration are just excuses. It's now or never. Further delay of these items will really put Taiwan in jeopardy during 2009-2015 time frame. Or maybe DOS just want to sell us out, but don't have the balls to admit it!

I don't think Taiwan does as a whole.  In the 1950's Taiwan was throwing rhetoric across the water and threatening to invade the mainland, while America threatened to 'unleash Formosa on the Communists'.  Today Taiwan isn't doing nearly enough to prop-up independence.  Just my opinion of course, but an educated one.

On the other hand - America not wanting to offend the PRC now is a joke.  The Olympics have traditionally been a time to mount boycotts and protests - and the PRC will never do anything which could jeopardise the success of the games in retaliation.

Your country is called United Kingdom of Great Britain and Northern Ireland, while mine is called the Republic of China. There is no doubt about that. You know we are not part of  Commie Dominion, and we know we don't want to be part of that crap. In such case, independence is nothing but a name change with definite result of a war. We can debate the ethics, need as well as justification for a name change for days and nights, but as long as commies are kept in bay, status quo is acceptable but unsatisfactory to all sides. Independent Taiwan is no significance in human development, which, as I described, is nothing but a name change. What really matters is a Free Mainland China without commies, but since we can't do that, and we both see no way to achieve that, we can at least have peace before major FUBAR breaks out.

RockyMTNClimber    Who gives a damn about offending China?   5/9/2008 4:51:37 PM
The world's concern about offending China mystifies me completely. They are hardly worthy of that concern. It is they that ought to quake at US about upsetting US (along with all of their other western trade partners). We can buy those goods anywhere in the Pacific Rim. As to Taiwan, if they want to spend money on submarines or fighters, or anything else, it's okay by me. It shows they are taking their defense seriously and they are willing to put their money where their mouth is. The fact that they want to buy F-16s is a bonus. It will keep Americans employed and that is supposed to be a good thing.

Let them buy the damn jets and tell China to sod off.

I think Bush needs to call up Condi and remind her of the order of things until January 2009.
