Most analysis of the recent battle in the Uzbin Valley, in which 10 French paratroopers were killed, concludes that the lack of UAVs for aerial reconnaissance allowed the patrol to fall into the ambush, and the lack of helicopters for air support prevented the troops from receiving resupply or timely and persistent fire support. The French forces currently have no UAVs at all in Afghanistan, and only two helicopters (which are only lightly armed Caracals designed for CSAR). Consequently, the French have decided to beef up their forces there, and are sending UAVs and additional helicopters to the theatre.
