som french protestants who fleed france after religion war. A strong SA minority.

Actually, they are not a minority but are part of a minority (Afrikaners). No-one considers themselves Huguenots in South Africa. I am not aware of any communities elsewhere that exist. They seem to have assimilated entirely into the societies they joined (Prussia/Holland/US etc).

Just a (probably ignorant) question.... .... if 17th, 18th and 19th Century British soldiers have funny French last names like "De Vigny", is it reasonable to suppose they were Huguenots? Of course by 19th Century they could be Revolution exiles, and before 17th C they could be men with estates and titles in France...

Not likely Huegenots but rather Norman names.
