Subject: Somali mind set?

"In our culture we were nomads and we believed it was our right to take sheep, to take cattle. That is how we see the ships. They are our sheep and we will take them." http://www.independent.co.uk/news/world/africa/why-we-became-pirates-by-the-nomad-jailed-for-life-1706327.html Cannot tell if this is a common view by Somali pirates or the general population.

This isn't very politically correct, but what the hell.   The city where I work has a small community of recent Somali immigrants.  The area I work is largely black and hispanic, but the Somalis stand out because their women still wear their traditional clothing, which usually consists of brightly colored dresses and veils.  Their men will usually be dressed like any other American male.

The thing that struck me about the Somalis from my dealings with them is that they are very difficult people.  They seem to have a hard time getting along with their neighbors, and much of the time their children are bullies.  They tend to be very defiant, but for the most part respect my authority (or at least my position in society).  From my experience they also seem very pushy, making a lot of unrealistic demands.  One woman insisted I escort her to the bus stop every day because of some problems she was having with neighbors (she claimed to be living in abject fear of her neighbors, which I thought odd considering where she came from).  Obviously a lot of the locals don't care for the Somalis either, which doesn't make the situation any easier.  I was wondering if this behavior was a trait peculiar to Somalis, but these days you have to be careful attributing what could be perceived as negative character traits to a specific ethnicity.  The above article seems to indicate that my suspicious may have some merit.

I recently read in a law enforcement bulletin that in some American cities African immigrants are starting to form their own street gangs for both protection and criminal purposes.  One can only wonder how this whole "what's yours is mine" mindset some of these immigrants are bringing with them is going to have on crime.

The attitude dislayed by the Somali's there are not just for the Somali's. We have a lot of NE African refugee/immigrants in some of our cities here and that attitude is prevailant in all of them. Gangs and such, tempered with an intolerant Islamic ideals. Alot of Sudanees are the same way.
