Turboprops were an improvement of propeller driven aircraft. Instead of having pistons drive the propeller, turboprops had gas turbine. They emerged about the same time as jets, at the end of WWII. Jets offered much higher performance, There was also a problem with propeller blades. Gas turbine can rotate at much higher rates, causing the propeller blade tips to exceed the speed of sound. When A-10 has been designed, a turboprop drive was an option, but, I guess, nobody wanted a propeller back in 70's, I guess. However, turboprop drive generally offers better fuel efficiency, compared to jet engine. An aircraft can loiter longer above the battlefield, when it is desired. In contested airspace, one might want high speed jets to fly in quickly, drop the load, and run home even quicker. Otherwise, it might be preferred to have attack aircraft loitering around, ready to engage as needed. Douglas Skyrider flew long into jet age, being used heavily during Vietnam War..
