Subject: B29 in European Ops (hypothetical)
giblets    10/24/2013 5:18:47 AM
Perhaps a little less controversial than some other posts, but wondering on how you guys thought that the B29 would have fared in European operations (yes I know there was no need to etc, this is purely performance based). I didn't realise that it actually had a lower service ceiling than the B17, but it still had a significantly increased speed (cruise of 220mph vs 182mph for the B17 (max 357 vs 287mph). Bomb load was also significantly greater. How would it have faired against Me-109s, FW190's, ME262, 163s etc?

It would have been slaughtered as the B-17 was.

Wouldn't make sense, it has far too much range for the mission requirment.

The principle bombers in each theater were optimized for the needs of that theater.

How is that argument logical?

The B-17 was designed as a coastal defense bomber to attack battleships on paper. The requirement was for 1600 kilometers range with 2 tonnes of bombs to hit a mameuvering point target. It failed.

The Lancaster which was designed/evolved to bomb Germany was a bomber that carried 4 tonnes 2000 kilometers to blast large area targets with indiscriminate saturation bombardment. It worked sort of as designed.

The B-29 was a super-sized B-17 that did not apply lessons learned. Nut you need a fast bomber to bomb from relatively low altitude at night. What was the B-29 before it became MiG bait? Modified into a medium altitude rather fast night area target bomber.

The principle bombers in each theater were optimized for the needs of that theater.
