Subject: F-35 vs. Eurofighter
IAFbestinworld    8/13/2004 11:49:07 PM
Lockheed says that besides the f-22, the f-35 will be the best air to air fighter in the future, is this true? Could an f-35 take a Eurofighter? My opinion says yes since f-35 contains more stealthy characteristics.

What sort of mission would that load out be optimised for? To paraphase an expression we use here, any kind of mission it was to go on. ;)

I don't see any ASRAAMs. What are the missiles just outboard of the LGBs. Looks like MICA

Well IRIS-T is an advanced short range air-air missile isn't it? So I'm right.... nerrrrrr!

Eurofighter would rely on altitude and a fast release to launch from distance. A corridor would be cleared through air defence to the main target. A lot of missions against anti-air points intitially, but getting the job done. Munitions with guidance make this more accurate and so viable these days. The F-35 would sneak in at 10,000 ft (to avoid the saturation flak) and try not to show up on radar (fingers crossed that technology stands still for that trick guys) and release closer to main target. Job done quicker, unless Typhoon uses a long range stealth missile (or UCAV) on the main target. It's funny, for all the talk of the Typhoon being a cold war aircraft, I think that the F-35 will be outdated first. True the radar is fading fast, but that isn't as critiacal as losing it's mission profile. How adaptable is the F-35?

I guess anyone who wants to lose their entire air force at a 10 to 1 ratio could follow you down the non stealth road. And before you guys go on about stealth not being a wonder weapon. Think about German jets fighting Allied propeller aircraft. Until you have it as well stealth remains a force multiplier and a wonder weapon compared to your non stealthy can be shot before ever seeing us aircraft. If you want to talk about bombs being dropped after cleaning up the air defense situation maybe you should try comparing your dainty little Typhoon to our B-52's B-1B's and B-2's.

Yippee, another jingoistic bout of bile from the states. Countries with a choice between the F35 and the Typhoon aren't going to be fighting the US or other countries with the F35 anyway, so that sort of comparison is meaningless. Also, since the comparison doesn't involve the USAF, mentioning B52s, B1s and B2s is equally nonsensical. Oh, and German jets didn't have the sort of advantage over allied prop planes you seem to think.

DarthAmerica    There is no comparison between the JSF and EF2000 in strike...   2/26/2006 2:54:22 PM
...Keep in mind this is not a requirements based comparison. In which case some would be more than happy with the comparitively meager strike capability of the EF2000. Basically one F-35 is the strike equivilent of about a half dozen to a dozen EF2000's. Consider a typical strike mission against a fixed target like Osirak. A single JSF could fly out armed with a pair of PGMs(JDAM, SDB, JSOW or whatever). Bomb the target and RTB. Again this operation could be flown by a single fighter. In reality you would send more, a wingman, for redundancy and other reasons. By comparison a EF 2000 flown mission would require a strike package similar to the one sent in by the IDF/AF with tanker support. Of course todays PGMs could cut the number of strike aircraft by half. But you would still need the escorts and probably in todays thread environment a dedicated SEAD element. Its like saying the Superetendard would be just as effective as F-117 over Iraq in 1991 because its faster and carries more bombs. As to the issue of bomb carriage... http://jsf.mil/images/f35/f35_technology_weapons.jpg"> So the F-35 does EVERYTHING a legacy fighter can. Only better and with a lower RCS even with external weapons.

Sticking external weapons on an F35 will completely destroy its stealth.

Yimmy no it doesnt. It will still have RCS advantage compared to legacy designs in the same way F-18E has advantages over F-18C. Even with external stores there is a very tactically useful advantage in detection range for these two. The same applies to the JSF vs Legacy aircraft.
