Actually the system in question is a continuous emitter or array housed inside the missile - the idea being that it selectively damage/degrade electronics waypoint fashion. The test in question featured targets that were essentially computers housed in representative structures -i.e. not hardened systems afaik.. to be quite honest it's not the best way I can think of to utilize a $1M system if degrading IT capability is the idea..

That would make it more like an AESA transmitter sans receiver array rather than a microwave radio strober? I can see some advantages in bistatic illumination for off angle signal chasing, but why tickle semiconductors with it? Kind of useless if there's no path into the target computer circuitry (turn the computer OFF and unplug.).

It would be interesting if the warhead also housed a cyber weapon.

Six Lockheed F-35B jets land on ship for Marine Corps testing

May 18 Six U.S. F-35B fighter jets built by Lockheed Martin Corp landed on the USS Wasp amphibious warship on Monday for two weeks of operational testing required before the Marine Corps can declare a first squadron of F-35s ready for combat use in July, according to a U.S. defense official.

The testing, taking place off the coast of Virginia, will involve the six F-35 B-model jets, the highest number of F-35s ever used on a Navy warship to date, as well as Marine Corps pilots, maintenance personnel, and logistics experts, said the source, who was not authorized to speak publicly.

The tests will check the ability of the stealthy jets to integrate into flight and deck operations on board the ship. They will include operations and weapons loading at day and night, the jets' ability to coordinate digitally with an on-board logistics system call ALIS, and how well the crew can deal with sch

6-8? That's a bit smaller number than I expected for an op-eval.

Depends on the plane, You can park a dozen and a half Harriers on it or more but normally you only operated 8-10 max. Any more and the air division was overwhelmed.

The airforce wants F-35s to control drones.

My perdiction:

I slightly stretched F-35D version, with 2 seats an advent 6 gen engine and a back seat.
if your going to ask the pilot to fly in contested space, dog fight, drop bombs, be an awacs, make a sandwich, control a preadator drone, while performing a reach around, you need more eyes.
and BTW. In the 2020s strike eagles will start getting old

The artilect can handle backseat chores by the time we need the F-35 to node up.

You need three people to look at it land..So much for automation..The Just So Failed should be cancelled. The X-47 can land without any person looking at it.

  • Carl

“Davis said after breakfast that Marines are flying an engine module out
aboard a V-22 to demonstrate it can done as part of the tests aboard the
Wasp.” One must ask specific questions to learn the truth. An “engine module”, just the frame? Or does he mean an engine? And does he mean an F-35 engine?

Another example: When Congress asked the Corps last month what it needs if given extra OCO slush fund money, it replied:

“Dunford requested six Lockheed Martin F-35B Lightning II Joint Strike Fighters (JSF), two Lockheed Martin KC-130J tankers, one Bell Helicopter H-1 attack helo and one Hawker Beechcraft UC-12W Huron transit plane. He also requested Link 16 digital interoperability upgrades for the Boeing AV-8B Harriers and Sikorsky CH-53K heavy lift cargo helicopter, as well as digital interoperability, ballistic protection and integrated aircraft survivability upgrades for the Bell-Boeing MV-22 Osprey. In the research, development, test and evaluation (RDT&E) account, he requested another $17 million for CH-53K Link 16 improvements and another $10.7 million for MV-22 digital interoperability upgrades.

Another billion for new goodies, and then complain there are no funds to fix the old ones. And its a lot more than 158 aircraft. There are over 100 FA-18s not in reporting status and at least 50 CH-53Es. Why spend any money on the F-35B since it is still halfway through development? Hopefully, Congress will change this request to show that it loves the Marines more than defense contractors.
  • This is next level stupidity here. Whats the normal landing procedure for any Bird landing on a flatop of any kind?
Dont you need a LSO, and other safy measures?
