Subject: How will F-35 perform in air-to-air vs. Rafale, Gripen, Typhoon?
ugadawg5    7/10/2006 8:32:37 PM
Obviously the air-to-ground will be a tremendous advantage for the F-35, but how about the air-to-air capabilities? I would think even against the Gripen, a bit behind the Rafale and Typhoon. I'd like BVR and WVR opinions please. Thanks.

Just based on radar/avionics performance alone it wins. Add in its other advantages and its a slaughter. It tends to help when the opponent cant "see". In WVR it will still have tremedous T/W, DEW and S/A advantages. Doubtful it be doing much WVR anyway.

"Doubtful it be doing much WVR anyway." Maybe in present conflicts, but not with a China conflict or something comparable.

Even WVR, where individual pilot skill counts the most, it's got the benefit of of being another "small" agile fighter. Its aspect ratio looks to be pretty low, which is probably going to give it a great roll rate.

Maybe in present conflicts, but not with a China conflict or something comparable And you think China will be flying one of the aforementioned platforms, eh? Curious.

The best China has is the SU-30MKK, which has a huge RCS and a big fuel tank--it should be graphic and shocking to the rest of the squardron. Imagine the chatter in Mandarin as they see this giant fireball and still no enemy-chee chong choo moo goo lets get the FK outta here!!!

Well the Rafale is french and the Gripen is Swedish. They don't have furrows in their forehead, it is the supermarket barcode!

The Gripen would have no chance whatsoever. As currently equiped the Typhoon would have no chance whatsoever. The Rafale would have very small chance, because of its combination of a advanced EW suite(critically with good directional and active jamming capability, the Tiffy doesn't have the latter), good LO features, IRST and a BVR capable IRM(which the Tiffy doesn't have). Basically there is a chance that the Rafale could detect the F-35's radar emissions/any AMRAAM's fired, jam them then take a shot with MICA using the IRST for sighting. However, I reckon it would only achieve similar sorts of kill ratio's to what the Iraqi Mirage F-1's did against the Iranian F-14's during the Persian gulf war, about 1-15 or 1-20. Those odds would go down if the F-35 was under AWAC control, but would go up if the Rafales were escorted by offensive EW types... but I don't know anybody building offensive EW types so the point is really moot until somebody does. Just as well that all three are designed to beat SU-xx's and not F-35's.

I'd hasten to add that the best chance for a Tiffy or Rafale equiped force would be to attack the F-35's airfields first using Storm Shadow or Apache, preferably while escorted by offensive EW types, while having some comrades run decoy missions to draw off the F-35's and in the Tiffy's case, while using an inconspicuous piece of highway as a base to prevent a counterstrike. It would be a roll of the dice with the risk that you would run into some F-35's along the way, but it would give better odds than going air to air with the F-35's.

How does operating with AWACS change the Typhoon's odds?
