I meant the Javelin, but yeah I realise it isn't fitted for weapons carriage.

The funny thing is that it is not entirely American either! It is part Israeli - presumably for the purposes of making it more attractive for the military.

I am a huge fan of the T/A-50, and really think it could be marketed as a true replacement for the F-5. Sadly, I doubt it will happen - a decade too late and lacking a global conflict needing a large number of "lower"-end combat aircraft.

Yimmy    RE:Best advanced jet trainer for 2006 T50   4/18/2006 1:58:39 PM
Woha.... I just read that article and am very impressed with the T50. I didn't realise it was powered by a 404 and had the capacity for decent radar. This aircraft seems to be very nearly as capable as the Grippen, only in an even smaller package - and that is the oldest stealth tech going. Fill in the rear c0ckpit with an extra fuel tank, and give it the capacity to fire AMRAAM and ASRAAM with a helmet mounted sight, and poorer nations have a first rate aircraft.

EADS MAKO ADVANCED TRAINER AND LIGHT ATTACK AIRCRAFT, GERMANY looks the best! sthelthy, sexy and so on... and the Yakovlev YAK-130 COMBAT TRAINER, RUSSIA looks good as well. I heard it will be upgraded and be used as a Cheap UCAV platform! Neat, huh!

I just don't see that "little" Javelin being able to carry anything (tactical ordnance) useful at all, maybe not even slinging an SDB pack under the fuselage, and the wingtips are too small to effectively fit any AAM rail (even a single tube Stinger). Depending how the main gears retract would determine how useful the underside would be for carriage. As for looking disproportional in its design (long fuselage, narrow wingspan), it certainly may have been designed/built using lifting body techniques (although strapping on external hardware would severely hamper that, what with the wings not being configured to carry/offset any serious amount of additional load). It looks reminiscent of the BD-10J, a homebuilt designed to break Mach. If anything, I think the Javelin is nothing more than a rich man's airshow hotrod, or an aerial sportscar for the aviation-enthused rich and famous, although its (suggested) economy of operation certainly would suggest it's an ideal T-38 replacement. http://www.airforce-technology.com/projects/javelin/

MadRat    How much does the T-50 share in common with the Ching-Kuo?   4/18/2006 10:24:38 PM
They sure bear a striking resemblance to one another. The Ching-Kuo was basically an over-priced F-16B and F/A-18B knockoff at $37 mil apiece. Sure hope the T-50 doesn't share the price tag in common with its older brother.

I've heard there's another trainer coming out from a start-up aircraft company based in the US.  Its their first aircraft but they say its pretty kick ass.  Scheduled to come out with a prototype in 2012.  Slotted to be about $15M and able to do more than the T-50.  You think they'll make the competition??
