Subject: Pak army in lebanon

though previously announcing the refusal to send the troops by Pakistan and reservations showed by israel to accept military presence of any country that does not has diplomatic relations with her, the Government has announced to send the troops. My feelings are that this is just for face saving. Govt. of Pakistan did not want to give plain refusal to lebanese so they have sent a handful of 200 men from engineering corp for demining of the cluster bobm remains. or could it be the reason that some friendly countries in middle east did not want Pakistan to send strong contingent into this?

well I doubt its for face saving reasons.  While the Pakistani army and in general all Pakistanis would have loved to send their troops to help patrol the border between Lebanon and its southern neighboor(as you know, that Pakistani share strong attachment and feeling with the suffering of people from the middle east and the Islamic world).  I think the main reaon they where initially reluctant to do so was simply that they already have enough on their plate!  Pakistani Armed Forces are currently running the country under General Pervez Musharaf, its army is currently waging war against Al-Qaeda and the resugent Taliban on it western Afghan border,  the army still has to patrol its large border with India especially around Kashmir where India has stationed in excess of 700,000 troops and then top this all off with the continuing efforts at rebuilding in the earthquake areas that struck Pakistan last year and general nation building throughout the country.  So I dont think its about face saving at all, but rather that they have quite a lot to handle as it is.  In fact, I find it quite amazing that they've managed to do all of this and still contribute by sending those de-miners.  What a capable force this army is!  though I am an ardent believer in democracy and would truly like to see, and hope our US administration helps in this regard, a return to full democracy in Pakistan which I strongly believe is important for all US allies, I have to nonetheless commend this 'military' regime in Pakistan on its outstanding performance.

well written..... never saw it that way but does make a lott of sense. They sure are doing a lot of work for an army! But I too want demoocracy in Pakistan.  It is right that all nations should have.

just wanted to add.. that the sending of 200 personnel is no small feat either!.... just look at the operations in neighbooring Afghanistan, some countries such as Estonia, have send a small contingent of just a dozen troops!  So 200 is also quite remarkable considering how busy the Pakistani army has been in the past year with the war on terror from Afghanistan and war on terror emanating from Indian occupied Kashmir, and to top iit off running the country(which they shouldnt really be doing)
