Most of you must have seen alrady the greater middle east map and know that pakistan is part of this map. is it a new development or pakistan was already in the older maps as well? if new, does it has any thing to do with the transit role that country would play for the energy reserves of central asia?

I dont think this is that big of a deal.  Because up to the 1960's, Pakistan was a geopolitically on every map and according to US state department a part of the Middle East along with Afghanistan.

Only recently from the 70's onwards was Pakistan re-designated as being a part of South Asia as the bulk of her population lies on the eastern side of the Indus river.  Now, 30 years later Pakistan is being re-assigned the region of the Greater Middle East which is where I feel it rightly belongs.

Pakistan culturally, ethnically and more importantly from a religious point of view is orientated more towards the Middle East and Central Asia.  The country can lay claim to several regions as the country is located at the 'cross road' of Asia, Central Asia, South Asia and the Middle East and as such can go either way!

I think this designation will prove more appropriate as the South Asian designation for Pakistan was more of a misnomer and the current designation is more appropriate and more importantly accepted by Pakistanis themselves.

nice.. plus I think most Pakistani will be happy with the return to the middle eastern designation.  South Asia has been nothing but problems, war  for Pakistan.  It a region synonymous with poverty, corruption, immaturity and AIDS.
Pakistanis and Pakistan will be more happy and better off if grouped in and made to work closer with the MIddle East or even Central Asia.  I think this new grouping is for the better!

yeah...pakistan is better classified in the group of countries known for production of suicide bombers, no rule of law, autocratic rule or dictatorships and intellectual stagnation.

the best thing is that Pakistan who inherently dislike being grouped into South Asia (but only want to take advantage of the region from an economic point of view) will benefit from this new designation and rightfully be labelled as being part of the middle east where it truly belongs from a geographic (Sulaiman mountain range ends in the midline of Pakistan), cultural, ethnic and political standpoint.
