Subject: Brit Camo

I was just wondering if the UK MoD has any plans to jump on the Digital Camo Band wagon. I personally dont see the need as In my opinion the brit DPM is one of the best camo patterns available.

The term to keep an eye out for is PECOC. This will be the new clothing and equipment line for the British Army. DPM is retained, but changed slightly and additional patterns added (same basic pattern, new colours) Desert DPM now has additional darker colour flecks, standard mucks about with the colours a bit but is otherwise the same and there are schemes more suited to the urban environment with blue-grey patches.

No sign of digital schemes anywhere

PECOC!!!!!!  Pronounced Peacock im sure!  My god, what a name for a clothing and equipment program.  Classic!!!
I take great delight in wearing Brit DPM or Multicam when supporting a field ex with teh US army and pointing and laughing at their ACU's.  Mean I know, but have to amuse myself somehow ;)

These pictures do not appear to be much of a shift from the current pattern. Shame I hoped we might go for a version of the Canadian Digital CADPAT, which is much better IMHO!

DragonReborn,

Those aren't PECOC patterns.

The PECOC patterns aren't chosen on people's opinions, but tests to identify what actually works in the terrain where it will be used.

Having seen how well DPM works, it would take a fair amount to convince me that any digital patterns are better.
Digital patterns are fashionable, but then fashion is a form of ugliness so intolerable that we have to change it every six months. Since war is pretty ugly anyway, military fashions tend to last longer.

Interesting, FK, can you confirm this is one of teh options under development as part of PECOC?

Liam, you may "Like" the US armys ACU pattern but you are well in the minority!!!!!  Its pretty much universally despised.  The USMC did it right, the US Army did not as far as a "Universal Pattern" goes.

Actually more like changes in colour shade than colour per se.  Although there are suggestions about a entirely new type suuitable for use around transitional terrain areas, eg the "Green Zone" and its desert surroundings in Helmand.  Its also suggested that the desert will have an additional slightly darker colour added to help with night time in desert conditions.  And possibly something for urban terrain, although I'm not entirely convinced of this because it's so difficult to manage in the field.

It seems UK has extensively tested digital and concluded that it doesn't work as well as their current patterns, which basically go back to WW2 (not desert), although there have been tweaks to the shades!  One story doing the rounds is that the Canadians stuffed up their production but were stuck with it and kept quiet to avoid embarrassment, the US saw it and thought it looked cool so adopted it.  Doesn't explain the Germans though.  Of course this invites a question, is there a NATO agreed test regime for camo effectiveness, or is it left to nations who obviously have their own tactical scenarios at quite a short distance (a very few hundred metres) all camo patterns blend into one.
