Subject: Fourth Plinth in Trafalgar Square
earlm    1/9/2008 12:47:23 AM
ht*p://www.london.gov.uk/fourthplinth/plinth/future.jsp So I see the headline on a blog and I think "I bet all the entries are from a bunch of multicultural and leftist jackasses." Sure enough I click the link and see that's what it is. I'll go them one better. Put a statue of a jihadi cutting off John Bull's head. You would think the statue would be of Bomber Harris, Churchill, or something good about GREAT Britain. Sad to see what's happening to your country. I hope the UK does a 180 and solves its problems.

Britain has had many, many great men, and women, throughout its long and illustrious history.

If you were to do a list of "Great Britons" it would probably be longer than that of a similar list from any other country.

I propose putting a statue of Wellington on the empty plinth in Trafalgar Square, if he hasn't got a statue anywhere else in London.

Other contenders for the plinth?  How about Charles Darwin, or William Shakespeare, or Isaac Newton, or Charles Dickens or Sir Francis Drake, or Florence Nightingale (nursed sick and injured British soldiers in the Crimean War), or Edward Elgar (composer), or William Caxton (the inventor of the printing press), or Edward Jenner (pioneer of vaccination), or Charles Babbage (computer pioneer), or Sir Ernest Shackleton?

Wrong. He was the first person to introduce it to England. The Printing Press was invented in Germany by Johann Gutenberg.

Would rather have a statue of  Mary Seacole than Florance Nightingale.

Wellington has plenty of statues all over the place... main London one is outside Royal Exchange....
there is a Drake one in London as well but cannot remember where it is... (obviously one in Plymouth). there is also a Marlbourgh one if we are talking great military...

or Downing st and Horseguards on the other side. a lot of the military ones are close together down there and you can go past them all within 5 mins of coming out of Trafalger square heading west.
