Subject: New Regimental/battalion role specialization
Worcester    2/2/2005 11:55:47 PM
Has anyone seen a breakdown of the ORBAT for the infantry battalion role specialization by light/medium/heavy? I note the CGS said last week that battalions within the Field Army brigade org would now increase from 19 to 23 presumable with the new fixed roles. It's fairly easy to figure out the slots available but I wondered if anyone knows who will go where precisely?

TA, Longrifle.

I was 151 Reg Logistics, then moved to infantry with the PWRR, and now I'm at university down South, so moved to the 6 Batt Rifles, forming from the D&D's.

Congratulations on joining The Rifles.  It's a historic, motivating name.  It's also one of the few British regiments about which I know anything concerning its historical forebears.  Odd for an American, huh?  Part of that is due, of course, to the Sharpe books.  And then there's that unit formerly known as the 60th of Foot, aka The Royal Americans.....

Yes, I agree, the Rifles is a very motivating name.  I tend to get a bit bored with the TA these days, but I think I will enjoy myself in the Rifles, provided I attend as much as I should!  The only negative in the change from PWRR to the Rifles, is that I now have to do light drill, which is somewhat different, and requires changing my muscle memory somewhat.

What with Americas strong tradition on marksmanship, I am surprised you don't have a regiment akin to "the Rifles".

7 Rifles (also TA) are going on Op Herrick soon, and they are asking for volunteers from 6 Rifles.  I find the thought rather tempting.... but then it would mean taking a year out of university, and I'm already 21 heh....

Yimmy,

We did.  It was The United States Rifle Regiment, sometimes listed as the 1st United States Rifles and/or the United States Regiment of Riflemen.  It was active from 1808 - 1821.  They saw lots of frontier service, as well as service during the War of 1812.  They also wore green jackets.  Too bad the lineage has not been preserved to a modern unit.

It's an interesting page for anyone interested in frontier history.

I visited Winchester (Hampshire UK) over the weekend, and although regimental history isn't usually my thing, I popped into the Royal Green Jackets (which is / will become the Rifles) museum. Very interesting, and an awful lot of information about the regiment's American antecendents and its actions in the American wars.

On another note, I was also privelidged to hear the Light Division band (which I think is becoming the band of the Rifles regiment) in Winchester Cathedral. Like regimental museum's, band music isn't generally an interest of mine, but I have to say that they were absolutely fantastic, and the bugles sounded amazing. You're going to have to learn to march fast Yimmy!

According to Soldier Mag, UK Inf btns will be getting new 60mm Mortars. It'll be interesting to see where they fit within a battalion.

Just in case you don't know, it's now also been confirmed that we will upgrade the 8 Chinooks that have never flown, and we're also purchasing 6 EH101's from the Danes.

According to the British army website, we have stood up 6th Division. Presumably this will be a third deployable division HQ.
