When I was very young (perhaps even when my mother parked me under the kitchen table when the V1s were around) I seem to remember something about 'two wrongs don't make a right'.

Yes, Iran has committed an illegal act under international law.  However, there's Buckley's chance of calling them to legal account (and the incident was so insignificant that I'm not sure that its in the jurisdiction of the International Crimial Court, but I'll leave that to a lawyer).  However, this does not entitle any nation, not even the US, to indulge in other illegal action.  Now I realise some people find this deeply frustrating and perhaps don't even understand it.  However, that's the way the cookie crumbles.

Try this, lets assume the RN/RM did start shooting and managed to kill one or more Iranians.  Lets even assume that some of the RN/RM survived.  Do you think they'd be in Iran or UK now?  It's the mark of the stupid that they confuse activities with outcomes.  The required outcome was to get the RN/RM out ASAP.

The more I think about it the more I think the Iranians must have haggled over their operaiton.  Pick on the Brits, knowing that they'd obey the law an there would be no casualties on either side.  Or go for yanks knowing that they'd start shooting (being less disciplined) take casualties and then be able to put the captured US on trial for murder! I'll bet the real hardliners wanted option 2.

Don't have to speculate.  There have been several reports that the Iranians tried to capture American soldiers.  Maybe the Brits might want to take the 'less disciplined' approach.  Or maybe it was just more fore-sight into different engagement scenarios.

You right, I should have writen British armed forces.Or British navy.

I'm very sorry for British patriots.

Court martial these cowards and chain of command!

A lot of people including in USA or France are astonished by your behaviour.

It would have been better all these cowards be killed instead of throwing mud on your flag.

Well we all know there are a lot of very stupid people in France and the US.

If the Brits had opened fire first then they would be court martialled, by the Brits (assuming there were Iranians willing to front up, give evidence and be cross examined, and I'd lay money the Iranians would have produced people, but I'm less sure that they'de be willing to take an oath on the Koran! no doubt the mullahs would put in overtime working out how to get around that one).

Having been taking prisoner the first duty of the captives was to end that state.  If that means kissing Iranian arses then that's what you do.

What no one seems to get is the seriousness that these poor 15 had to go through. The heinous mental torture that the suffered at the hands of the Iranian oppressors .They called one of the captors MR. Bean, you hear that MR. BEAN!!!! How cruel, this left the poor marine to cry himself to sleep. Others faced similar cruelty, the ole slide the finger across the neck routine horrified the hostages, not to mention measurements taken of the body and, OMG they hammered and sawed wood as the y slept, oh the humanity of it all. No wonder why these poor souls quickly forsake there country and caved in.

------SARCASM / OFF------

Good Lord what an utter disgrace these “Men” in uniform are to the concept of the Marines. To hear a grown man admit to crying himself to sleep for being compared to MR Bean is just disgusting; this isn’t suitable behavior for any man let alone a soldier.

Omg, they striped the female of her cloths, what the hell do these Marines do for basic training, go to Disney World? They should be prepared to resist serious torture yet they cracked to a bunch of Fraternity house pranks.

NotUKOnly and of course Ralph Peters got it right on the money, this is an embarrassment of grand proportions. Viewing this as anything other then a failure is just unrealistic. Readily abandoning your nationality in a cowardly attempt to save your own neck is not the action befitting a soldier. They should have accepted the fact that they may die the second they signed up for military duty and headed for war.

Also to look at the selection of targets vs. US is nothing other then a perception of weakness, not one of rationality. Those Marines should have never let themselves be taken hostage PERIOD. They should have plainly ignored the kidnapping attempt and headed back to there ship. If there fired upon then you have the rights to bring about the aggressors destruction. But to so readily surrender is probably the worst thing they could have done. THEY were the AUTHORITY in that situation and should have acted like it. It’s like police officers surrendering to criminals.

Preventing future incidents and regaining respect should have been the Uks top priority, not just rescuing a bunch of cowards. People die in war situations period, but it’s for the greater good and beneficial outcome of the nation, or else why would anyone ever go to war?

Now I must ask for a CEASE and DECIST of all the nonsense people like Adamb spew about how incompetent the US military is while the UKs being true professionals. As we can all see now that is utter bullcrap, the military legend has been rendered a myth with what I see very little outcry from its public. What a shame.

Now the real quest

Wow aren't we a bunch of macho men.  Hey Jimme, you ever been taken hostage?  You think there is shame on a marine for crying himself to sleep in that situation.  I suppose you wake up in the morning, beat your chest and your idea of making love is whacking the nearest female over the head with a club and telling her to think of England...

The female captive was in the Navy not the marines (which I know are navy..) There's a difference between losing your kit during training and being stripped by a bunch of guys who are hostile and most possibly hold women in contempt.

I can't believe a lot of what I'm reading here.  I'd lvoe to see how hard all you guys who have made comments about them being pussies etc if you were put in the exact same situation.

Taken hostage no, kidnapped and beaten at gun point, yes, not to mention having been stuck up twice in my life.. And i can tell ya, i was a lot more angry and defiant then i was scared and obedient. Something happens to your mentality when you resign yourself to your fate. I remember thinking if i'm going to die here so be it but hes coming with me. Thats the attitude these service men should have had.

Then again your comparing apples to oranges, its not how any of us would have acted differently its how differently the many other soldiers who have been kidnapped have acted. Crying yourself to sleep isn't the problem, many prisoners behind bares do that every night, its doing so because the guards teased you about looking like MR Bean? friggin please.

Here in NY we had a soldier who threw himself on top of a grenade to save the rest of his buddies for crying out loud. Thats a soldier, thats a warrior, thats the type of service men i hear day in and out being berated by many UK posters as being incompetent louses. so don't talk to me about them having been scared, if they couldn't stand the heat they shouldn't have been in the kitchen.

It all boils down to there behavior being fine for an average Joe, not a trained soldier in what many of yous considere the "best trained military in the world".

This is an extraordinarily unproductive discussion.
Seems pretty plain that some of you American contributors really don't want the British in Iraq...perhaps best therefore if the allies pack up and leave it to the good ole US of A.....after all it's going so well isn't it?

I've got to say I'm discomforted by the actions of the naval personnel and the marines, but this slanging match seems just an opportunty for some aggrieved Americans (and the odd half witted Frenchman) to try settle to a few old scores. Nothing is said that is helpful, nothing is said that is insightful, just hysterical nonsense.

In the circumstances,  time for that Bex and a good lie down.

Before I put the Rn & Marines down I would like to know what there orders were. If they were obeying orders then I would go after the person who gave the orders, not the Rn & Marines.

They were following the United Nations rules of engagement e.g., shoot only when shot at ...

When I was very young (perhaps even when my mother parked me under the kitchen table when the V1s were around) I seem to remember something about 'two wrongs don't make a right'.
By your reasoning... And given that imprisoning and caging a human being is wrong....
So if someone kills your neighbor and rapes his wife and kills some of the kids- is imprisoning the perp ok, or still wrong??
It's the second wrong you worry about. ...
But I worry that leaving the perp out there gets more neighbors killed, and me too.
Making inaction a much bigger wrong.

Grow a spine. It's called protecting your stuff, and your neighbors stuff, and your civilization, from piracy and terrorism.

You wanted 15 folks home. Frequently, militaries are used for some grander scheme...
So the start of WW2 was like that - You didn't need to stop 'ze germans' - Just get all those men home?

Why did England later decide to get 15 people or more killed by campaigning in Afrika and then Normandy? Why fight, when you can keep more people safely at home?

Maybe your reasoning wasn't so reasonable two generation ago, or at any other time in england's past?

Neville Chamberlaine was in a similar spot. Dhimmitude in our time!

I've been in that very spot mnay times/many years, in a boarding party, and also aboard a Destroyer waiting for Iran to come out to play.

And my country's been in that spot many times: We don't ignore military action, piracy, and kidnapping lightly.
    Recent: 'Operation Praying Mantis' http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Operation_Praying_Mantis
Older: Impressment of American Seamen was one of the stated causes of the War of 1812.
Older still: The first United States military action overseas, executed by the U.S. Marines and Navy, was the storming of Darnis, Tripoli, in 1805, in an effort to bolster diplomatic efforts in securing the freedom of American prisoners and putting an end to piracy on the part of the Barbary states. [...]  get your head out of the sand - And stand up for yourself man, your ancestors would be ashamed!
Your cousins are ashamed for you.

Now pull yourself together, man!
Quit the whining.

Can we get back to fighting terrorism again, or is this it for you?
You just lost your nerve?
