the internet has an awful lot of daddy's so it's not really something you can point at any one guy and go it was him.  the british guy though is responsible for a very basic part of how the packet switching/addressing works.

I think alot of people are confusing the Internet with the Web. No one is claiming a Brit invented the Internet - but Tim Berners Lee did develop the WWW - something he was Knighted for.
 
Consider the Internet as the infrastructure; computers linked via cables, prtotocols, hubs and switches etc, that the Web 'sits on'. The World Wide Web, using Lee's HTML is what makes the Internet useful to us, interconnecting the pages we see on our screens.
