Subject: Cost of the U.K. Nuclear Deterrent?
Roman    10/10/2006 4:18:19 PM
Does anybody have any information on the following: 1) The cummulative amount of money that the U.K. has spent on developing/researching, acquiting/building, maintaining/upgrading/disposing of and operating its nuclear deterrent? 2) The amount of money that the U.K. was spending on its nuclear deterrent at its peak expenditure? 3) The amount of money that the U.K. is currently spending on its nuclear deterrent? 4) The projected spending on maintaining/replacing/whatever the U.K. nuclear deterrent? Values in contemporary or current money would be fine (but please state which it is). I am trying to compare the expenditure on nuclear deterrents of various countries. Logic suggests that due to its limited size and connections with the U.S. the U.K. deterrent was significantly cheaper than that of most other countries, but I would like to do hard comparisons with real numbers if possible.

I would also think it interesting to try to put a value on the success the deterrent has had for us.

Yimmy, I think you would find that to be almost impossible. It is true that a cost-benefit analysis should be done when major procurement decisions are made, but at some level these become very difficult to do and this is case with nuclear deterrents. In any case, I am not questioning the usefulness of the U.K. nuclear deterrent - I am merely trying to compare how cheaply (or lack thereof) the U.K. achieved its deterrence in comparison to other nuclear powers.

Nobody that's going to tell you, at least.

Well, the U.S. had a so-called 'nuclear audit' and the French figures have also been disclosed (I have the figures burried somewhere on my old computer), so I figured U.K. figures would also be publically available, or at least that estimates would be available. I don't expect that Russia, China, India, Pakistan, Israel and North Korea disclose any figures on their nuclear programmes, so a comprehensive comparison with all nuclear powers is going to be difficult at best, but to compare at least the three Western nuclear powers in terms of their spending on nuclear weapons.
