London Gallery Pulls Well-Known Artist, Fear of RoP Cited

Fearing Muslim rage, a London gallery has pulled the works of well-known surrealist Hans Bellmer out of an exhibition the day before it was supposed to open. (Hat tip: LGF readers.)

PARIS (Reuters) - A London gallery has decided not to show some works of art because it fears they would upset Muslims, a curator said on Friday, a week after a German opera house canned a Mozart production for the same reason.

The director of the Whitechapel Art Gallery decided to remove works by surrealist artist Hans Bellmer from an exhibition the day before it was due to open, one of the museum’s curators, Agnes de la Beaumelle, told Reuters.

“The motive was simply to not shock the population of the Whitechapel neighbourhood, which is partly Muslim,” she said. The Whitechapel area in east London is home to many ethnic minorities including a large Bangladeshi community.

The gallery issued a statement saying that some works were not included in the exhibition because of space constraints but declined to comment specifically on what Beaumelle said.

Did Bellmer mock the Prophet (propellor beanie upon him)? Nope.

He was just your everyday average talented Western pervert.

Nanny - looks like we've finally been lumped together in the same august company by this eloquently-spoken prole, since it is unclear from his profound statement which of us he was referring to.

They should take away the cab driver's license to operate. He offers a service to the public, so he is in no position to discriminate. As for the police officer, that should be automatic grounds for dismissal. How can he be expected to do a job as he will not be of service to certain ethnic groups. The Muslims are winning these tit for tat issues because we are letting them. We do not need to discriminate against them but make them abide by the laws and customs of western nations.

Indeed - and same with the Minnesota cabbies. If you dont want to drive a person because she has a dog, has a bottle of wine with her, is Jewish (or muslim, for that matter), is the 'wrong' shape/size/color according to you - that's fine, dont do so.  But dont expect to get a cab driver's license either.

There's a very similar problem to this developing in America, where religion-based organizations claim exemption from all sorts of common legal requirements that every other organization (for profit or not for profit) is expected to abide by.

In this case it's arguably worse, because the kinds of laws that they feel should not apply to them are very basic things, like health codes, food-preparation regulations, building codes, employment laws and so on.  For instance, non-profit child care centers in Alabama have to abide by all such regulations, while child care centers run by churches do not.

See fail to see a compelling reason why one childcare center should be compelled to abide by such laws, while the another one just down the road does not, regardless of wether it's owned by a person, a church or a circus troupe.

i have to agree with you on this one.  a police officer goes where the roster says he goes regardless of his personal opinions.  losing his license to drive hacks seems a reasonable response as well.

They could do like Minnesota is suggesting - put special colored lights on "muslim" cabs so people can avoid "disrespecting" their religion.  This would be quite interesting as I suspect it would soon lead to discrimination against "muslim" cabs and result in them soon being out of business in many areas.

Quite frankly, I always thought that London cabbies were highly regulated by the government so I'm surprised this could even happen.

Out of interest, should we be concerned about being consigned to being gentiles as well?
