Well, they never were part of the UK as such. Sure they were colonies of the Empire, and to this day they still both share our head of state (the Queen), however I do not think either nation would want to be directly governed by the UK today. Why should they be?

Australia and New Zealand never were part of the United Kingdom. They were part of the British Empire, and are currently members of whats known as the commonwealth. They both retain the Queen as head of state. Wikipedia has good articles on the British Empire, the UK and the Commonwealth.

Then, why not pass a law to annex OZ and NZ? Just like the US did to Hawaii.

Hmmm...annex Australia, New Zealand and maybe Canada? International uproar at ignoring the independence of nation states. That's why not. Why not go for Iraq, India, Egypt, South Africa, etc., etc....?

Then, why not pass a law to annex OZ and NZ? Just like the US did to Hawaii. What are you smoking champ??? Who is going to pass what law to annex Oz and NZ??? You need to do some heavy reading on the Commonwealth and international/constitutional laws. You are obviously missing something here. Australia became an independant federated nation in 1901. You my dear boy are over a hundred years too late! Perhaps we could make the USA part of Oz. Equally as stupid but we could inherit your strategic bomber force and some of your Playboy Playmates. Could be a win-win for both of us. ;) Doh!

What the hell? You can't just pass a law and tell everyone some other country now belongs to you.

In 1901, the same year OZ became an independent nation, the US annexed Hawaii. In 1910, Japan, already in control over Korea, declared annexation of it to the empire. In 1949, PRC took control over Tibet and declared its a Chinese territory. It's just willingness and force to install one's will. A few paper called legal document is never a problem to combination of guns and brains. Apparently, this will have never appeared in the United Kingdom. That is the thing which I don't understand. And, yes, legally speaking, Taiwan is still Chinese territory. The problem is that, under modern laws, the only legal government is on the island, while the widely recognized authority don't have the force, though with plenty of will, to install their will upon us, yet.

"annex" is another word for "conquer". "In 1901, the same year OZ became an independent nation, the US annexed Hawaii." The US knocked over the Hawaiian monarchy at the behest of US sugar growers who weren't getting favorable policies from the throne. Japan tried to annex Korea but lost it after WW2, they would've been hard pressed to maintain Korea as a territory for a prolonged period of time. In 1949, the PRC conquered Tibet, which used cover territory throughout what is now central China. The Silk Road was a narrow corridor for China in the east to trade with the muslim nations in the west. The Tibetans were expert cavalry fighters so it took many dynasties for Tibet to finally be subjegated. According to a treaty signed in Egypt between China, England and the US, Taiwan is part of the Republic of China. Since the only part of "The Repulic of China" is Taiwan, that makes Taiwan independent.
