About time too! They are still going ahead with the Pinzgauer Vectors though, despite the fact that they are not mine protected, and have very little protection, compared with vehicles like the Cougars (shown) and Nyalas.

I wonder if these new vehicles are being permanently assigned to units or pooled and then assigned to a light btn as necessary?

Built by Force Protection Inc. and have proved quite popular with US Forces in Iraq. I think they were originally employed by the USMC as Engineering Vehicles but have since spread to other roles. Funny thing is the 'Cougar' was originally designed for the British, the British Army bought a couple of 4 wheeled versions for use as mine clearing vehicles in the Balkans. They go under the designation 'Tempest' in British service. Thats why it strikes me as odd that its taken so long for the MoD to employ them in Iraq. As for the Pinzgauers, don't know much about them or what they'll be used for. Are they just mules for hauling troops/equipment round low risk areas or are they going to be used as patrol vehicles? If the latter then going on the description I would have assumed something like the Bushmaster with its combination of armour/endurance would have been more suitable but I have no idea of the comparative costs or potential maintenance headache of introducing yet another type into service.

I see that Force Protection Inc are making these as a Subcontractor to BAE Systems. Is this vehicle a varient of the RG 31 and RG 32 vehicles already made by BAE but having their birth place in Suth Africa?

If memory serves, the Cougar is a derivative of a standard Army truck design. It is really an American product (Force Protection Inc is a South Carolina registered company), owned by BAE Systems. It is not related to the RG31 or 32 as far as I know, though it is generally similar in concept.

I prefer the 4x4 Cougar for half of these. We should have got 100 of each (and forget the pinz) src=http://i9.photobucket.com/albums/a75/perfectgeneral/top_img_18.jpg

I'm not the biggest fan of Richard North but he he does well to tie together the threads of the Cougars development in this post. Long story short a subsidiary of Force Protection is contracted to produce a vehicle for mine clearance work in Bosnia, its based on the chassis of US truck (score one for Lawmans memory). Its designated Tempest and 8 are bought. Fast forward a couple of years and Force Protection are now selling this vehicle as the Cougar to the US Military. The 8 Tempests in British service seem to have dropped off the face of the earth.
