The Lizard King    6/1/2006 12:26:02 PM
Or is it time for Britain to lose this moniker?

"Great" is a referance to the largest island in the British isles therefor the term "the United Kingdom of Great Britian and Northern Ireland" is still relavent and perfectly applicaple P.S. - im sure this thread has been done before

No because Britain has lost it's right to call itself great.

And who defines what is "great" exactly?
Enemies/rivals or friends of the U.K.?
Is it judged by past acomplishments or present relevence? (Both of which are still significent)
Is "great" a relative term... great when compared to who... present day America or Uganda?
If we drop it now, and then 50 years later we somehow wind up as the dominent power of the world, do we get to have it back? And for how long?

While we're at it, we ought to pull down all our castles, since they're symbols of power we don't have anymore. I think our language needs to go as well. After all, we invented it, and now it's the dominent language of the world, we don't disearve to use it anymore because we lost the Empire that spread it.

Don't be daft.

Besides, as was stated earlier, the term as nothing to do with power, so it's a moot point anyway.

It's called Great Britain to distinguish itself from the much smaller Britain - Britanny in France.

To the French, Brittany is "Bretagne" and Britain is "Grande Bretagne."

That's why we know it as Great Britain.

And, in my opinion, Britain is still, and has been for centuries, the greatest nation on earth.

All you need now is a cricket team to match.

And for centuries the irish do not think so......but an international crook does not define greatness--just a very good thief.

Beside perhaps Australia I do not think a single ex colony would like to see the British back--now how great is that. In the sales business we call it no customer loyalty.

Say what you like imperialism, were it not Britain it would have been some other European country... and considering what most of the other countries got up too in their colonies, the British ones were damn lucky.
Far, far, far from perfect. But better than most.

Besides, I doubt the Indian children who were being sacrificed left, right, and center objected to the British showing up.

Cultural reform aside the British did tax without representation. Social change has been part of Indian society with or without British even some of the laws today are updated aggressively like womens rights and bringing moslems under common law. Well the Kohinoor is whose now??
